Sincerest Condolences Following Passing of Haywood “Woody” Bartlett

He loved the cowboy life and enjoyed sharing that life with others. Upon earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama he spent a short time in the U.S. Army before his acceptance into Auburn University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. He gained a sense of appreciation for pedigrees and breeding from Mr. Pete Reynolds, who bred American Quarter Horses for more than 70 years. His first mare was a three-in-one package purchased for $500. And from that mare he built a legacy breeding program that won him the 2016 Zoetis AQHA Best Remuda Award for producing outstanding Quarter Horse bloodlines since 1958.

In Loving Memory of Phelps Media Group Founder and CEO, Mason Phelps, Jr.

Born in 1949, Phelps’ passion for horses and equestrian sports started early and he was only sixteen when he was invited to participate in his first training clinic with the United States Equestrian Team. In 1968, he was named US Combined Training Association’s Rider of the Year and was alternate for the U.S. Three-Day Team for the Mexico City Olympic Games. His career as a trainer began in 1972, working first as an assistant at Flintridge Riding Club and later developing his own training stable for hunter/jumpers until his retirement from competition in the late 1990s.

AQHA Director Emeritus, Burdette Lee Johnson, Has Passed

Burdette’s love of horses found him traveling around the world as an AQHA judge. He served 29 years on the Butler County Fair Board. He was a long-term AQHA director, representing Iowa, and was elevated to director emeritus in 2007. He also served nine years on the board of the directors for the Iowa Quarter Horse Association and is an AQHA life member. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and dancing.

Condolences Following Passing of Phyllis Weiss

Phyllis Weiss passed away on March 23, in Reno, Nevada, just shy of her 95th birthday. She is survived by her husband of 72 years, AQHA Past President Howard Weiss, and three children, Wendy Weiss Lee, Michael Weiss (Kim Brown) and Nancee Weiss Siebert (Jeff Siebert). Phyllis was a beloved mother, devoted sister, loving grandmother, doting great-grandmother and loving mother-in-law.

Harris Leather and Silverworks might have never happened if it hadn’t been for Mabeline’s ‘little side business.’ She began hand-tooling leather belts and purses in the 1960’s. Locals will recall the Harris’ red and white two-horse trailer was frequently seen at horse shows around North Carolina, where Mabeline used the trailer’s tack room to display her wares.

Zippos Tiger Bar Laid to Rest

Ann Admonius had purchased Butch from the late Rodney Miller, and sent the gelding to trainer Troy Compton. Troy and Butch won all three legs of the Two Year Old Western Pleasure at the Tom Powers Triple Challenge after showing in Michigan, North Carolina and Florida in 1991. Zippos Tiger Bar would become the first horse to grace the cover of The Way To Go in June of 1991. Butch earned AQHA Superior awards in Open and Amateur Western Pleasure as well as numerous futurity and Congress championships. The trio once again placed in the top ten in Open and Amateur Western Pleasure at the 1993 AQHA World Show.
