“All bonds are built on trust. Without it, you have nothing.” – Unknown.

This statement is never more true than when talking about a horse and rider, especially when you have nothing to ensure that trust is reciprocated. No bridle. No saddle. Nothing.

As evident from the enthusiastic participation by our readers, there is nothing that captures the imagination quite like a horse being ridden bridleless or bareback. Why do you suppose that is? Does the vision hearken to the days of the Nez Perce Indians astride the spotted rumps of their Appaloosas galloping across the plains, bareback and bridleless?

Whatever the draw may be, the image of a horse and rider performing bridleless serves as the ultimate example of true horsemanship. Not only does bridleless riding exhibit an enhanced horse and rider connection, it shows superior balance and core connection, on the part of the rider, and willingness to accept direction from the horse. The practice itself promotes a focus on subtle leg and verbal cues as well as an increased sensitivity to seat and leg aids.

When the bridle, or saddle, is removed, there are no manmade aid to hide behind.

If you’re considering riding your horse bridleless, here are a few tips to ensure safety and success.

#1- Work in Stages- First, try using a bitless bridle and then progressing to a halter with a lead rope. Then, take another step to only using a neck rope.

#2- Solidify Your Commands- Before the bridle comes off, make sure you have a good stop and back command at your disposal. This means having the ability to bring your horse’s movement to a halt only by using your voice, legs, and seat.

#3- Secure Your Steering- Practice steering with your body language and encourage your horse to release from leg pressure before removing the bridle.

#4- Practice Safely- Practice bridleless riding in a safe space. Trying out your new skill in an enclosed and protected area like a round pen is a better choice than jumping out into the field or arena right away.

#5- Enjoy the Connection– Enjoy the newfound connection you’ve discovered with your horse.
