Blending authentic ranch work with show pen polish, Ranch Trail has become one of the fastest growing western classes. Judges and top exhibitors explain the obstacles, strategy, and horsemanship behind standout performances.
Few western classes have surged in popularity quite like Ranch Trail. Designed to reflect the obstacles and situations a horse might encounter while working on a ranch, the class blends practical horsemanship with the precision expected in today’s show pen.
Its rise parallels the explosive growth of ranch-style events across western disciplines. As exhibitors increasingly gravitate toward classes that emphasize realism and usability, Ranch Trail has become a natural extension of the ranch-horse movement.
“The whole western world has grown,” explains Curtis Reynolds, a roper, Versatility Ranch Horse competitor, and AQHA All-Around judge from Texas. “The growth of ranch riding has really spurred Ranch Trail. It’s more fun and less stressful for a lot of people. Not every step has to be perfectly measured like in the city trail, and financially it can feel more feasible for exhibitors to compete in.”
