What is the most important element in a horse show’s success? Location? Class schedule? Judges? Multiple factors contribute to making a successful event, but it all starts with a good show manager and secretary. But finding that unicorn—a unique combination of knowledge, experience and motivation—can be challenging, especially for a small organization or new club officers.

APHA’s international headquarters is tentatively set to move to its new location in October 2019. Stockyards Heritage Development, a joint venture of Majestic Realty Co. and Hickman Companies, has begun the first phase of its $200 million development. Phase One plans include 175,000 square feet of shops, food and beverage, and creative office space that creates a distinctive cultural landmark reflective of other cities, such as the San Antonio River Walk.

It reports that the more than 3,600 registration applications that have been held up may soon be processed and shipped out. The association hired more than 30 part time and full time workers to help with catch up and most of the staff is working overtime to help alleviate the problem. 

The National Appaloosa Show and World Championship Appaloosa Youth Show is scheduled for June 25th – July 6th in Fort Worth, Texas. 

The Markel Insurance Breeder Championship Futurity Yearling Sale is a limited consignment sale designed to bring the nation’s top yearlings to public sale. The sale is only open to yearlings enrolled in the NSBA Breeders Championship Futurity or NSBA Color Breeders Championship Futurity and is held in conjunction with the NSBA World Championship Show each year.

The show will take place October 16-19 at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center in Las Vegas, NV. On October 16th, there will be a two-judge Youth/Amateur show sponsored by the Silver State Paint Horse Club. October 17-19, there will be a four-judge Open/Amateur/Youth National show sponsored by APHA. 

One part of the show that’s unique compared to other shows is that the mothers, who we all know work tirelessly day in and day out, whether they are at a show or not, get to be honored and gifted with a bottle of wine! However, there is a catch to getting the bottle of wine. In order to receive the gift, the mom’s (and possibly even a few dad’s) must enter the free “Mother’s Day All Breed Pleasure Class” in memory of the late Kathy Hunt. This is a walk/jog pleasure class, which doesn’t take much convincing to enter once they find out every rider gets a bottle of wine from one of the local award-winning wineries in Paso Robles.

Open and Non-Pro competition will be held at the beginning of the two week event in Fort Worth. Exhibitors will compete in a variety of disciplines including cutting, roping, halter, western pleasure, saddle seat, games, hunter under saddle, trail and much more. This year, new ranch reining classes are being introduced to the impressive line-up. With exhibitors, owners, and trainers seeking to earn National Championship Titles, there will be no shortage of hard work and talent demonstrated!
