Finding someone who understands your lifestyle as a horseman and reflects that connection suitably in your home or barn is a tall order, that is, until Vandalay Designs came to fruition in 2002. The team of Misty Elenburg and Loretta Elenburg specializes in all aspects of home design and construction, including new builds, remodeling, and interior design, and chances are good they’ve already enhanced the lives of another horseman you know.
Read on for our Q & A with Misty, and for input from some of their well-known clients – plus more amazing photos!
Q: Tell readers about the services you offer, and who is involved in the business:
A. Vandalay Designs is a full service design company involved in every phase of a remodel or new build for both homes and barns. We manage the process from start to finish, working with our own trusted team or alongside a client’s existing contractor. We also offer full interior design and home furnishing services. In many cases, we handle the project from the ground up and finish by delivering and fully furnishing the home for a true turnkey experience.
My mother in law, Loretta Elenburg, is my business partner, and we have been building this company together for nearly a decade. A fun fact about Loretta is that she and her family grew up in the cutting industry and even owned the legendary Docs Hickory.
Q. What is your background in interior design?
A. I began my career 18 years ago as a Realtor and later transitioned into flipping higher end homes in the Fort Worth area. Loretta had been designing homes for years for friends and family, originally as more of a passion project while focusing on her children and grandchildren. One day I called her and suggested we combine our experience and build something together. That conversation led to the start of our business nearly a decade ago, and through hard work and perseverance, we have grown Vandalay Designs into the company it is today.
Q. Word is you began the design business to support your horse habit! How have the connections to the horse industry been important?
A. When we first started the business, I was still involved in showing horses, which made balancing a new company and the cost of horses a challenge. With our shared love for horses and our passion in farm and ranch real estate, we decided to lean into the equestrian side of our work. That decision has opened so many doors for us, and we are incredibly grateful for the support of the equestrian community. It is a joy to work with clients who share the same passion, and on many days we probably talk more about horses than houses!
Q. Do your designs incorporate the equestrian lifestyle?
A. Absolutely. With every project, we take the time to truly listen to our clients and make each design personal to them. That may look like embroidering a bit into custom furniture, framing a meaningful photo of a special horse, creating backlit displays for prized trophies or even designing an eight foot custom welded backlit logo for a fireplace.
From custom barns to one of a kind interior details, we want every space to truly reflect the person or business behind it. Our goal is for friends, family, and customers to walk in and immediately say “Wow! This is so you.”
Q. Who are some of your customers Equine Chronicle readers would know?
A. We have been incredibly fortunate to receive such strong support from our community. Some of our clients include Arturo and Jesse with Maestas Show Horses, Keith and Sydney Miller with Miller Show Horses, Robin and Jenny Frid with Robin Frid Show Horses, Tami Farmsworth and Mike Hachtel, Tina Anderson, and Jana Simons to name a few.
Q. What else should readers know about Vandalay Designs?
A. We also work closely with the cutting and reining community, including the recent new build and design of the Solo Select facility. We have also had the pleasure of working with reining judges and one of the partners of the legendary Metallics MVP, and we are currently designing a new build in Utah for a barrel racing and roping family.
While the performance horse world is near and dear to us, we truly enjoy working with anyone who shares a love for horses and the sport.
Their clients, from Keith and Sydney Miller, who call them “Amazing,” to Arturo Maestas and Jesse Jones, to Jenny Frid, who is on her second project with them, have wonderful feedback.
“They were ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!! Misty and Loretta went above and beyond. And were so reasonable. I would recommend them to anyone and I do!” Arturo Maestas.
Licensed Real Estate Agent Jenny Frid says their portfolio is very broad. “Loretta and Misty excel at adapting to any concept someone is wanting to achieve, and if you don’t like something, they figure out how to find something you love. They are an amazing team that no matter the size of the job they make you feel like you are their most important client,” she explains. “I refer these ladies to every real estate client I have looking for guidance. Not only do they not disappoint, but they always receive rave reviews.”
