By William Given

Horse breeding is a synthesis of art (intuition, vision for desirable traits) and science (genetics, reproductive technology) focused on improving quality, performance, and preserving bloodlines. This is accomplished using methods from natural mating to advanced techniques like artificial insemination and embryo transfer–all while balancing husbandry and genetics to achieve one’s desired outcomes.

The art of breeding is more about intuition and practicing sound equine husbandry.

• Visually assessing and selecting horses with ideal conformation, correct movement, and sound disposition.

• Strategically combining bloodlines to enhance specific qualities or preserving rare lines is the key to bloodline management.

• Knowing when mares are in heat (estrus), timing the breeding or insemination, and managing pregnancy and foaling is necessary for successful reproductive management.
The science of breeding has much to do with assisted reproductive technology and genetics.

• To be successful, most breeders have had to gain a true understanding of the laws of inheritance and then apply that knowledge to the right pairing of the mare and stallion who are able to pass on desirable traits such as conformation, temperament, and athleticism. And, at the same time, learn to avoid the transfer of genes responsible for genetic defects.

• The use of artificial insemination (AI) includes using fresh, cooled, or frozen semen. Artificial insemination allows for wider genetic access, safer breeding, and easier management.

• Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) include procedures such as embryo transfer (ET) (moving an embryo to a surrogate), in vitro fertilization (IVF), and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) offer greater control over breeding.
