Filmmaker Marilyn Swick’s documentary, My Life Between the Reins, has been making the film festival rounds, winning awards, and captivating audiences with the story of Paige Baylis, a determined equestrian who doesn’t let cerebral palsy slow her down. Paige is well-known to many on the AQHA show circuit for her indomitable fortitude and infectious positivity. Without her hero-mom, Susie, who has been at her side all the time, and is a fixture at the shows, Paige would not be where she is today.
Under the guidance of Kevin Dukes of Dukes Performance Horses, Paige shows in Western Pleasure, and Susie shows in Hunter Under Saddle classes. Marilyn also trains with Kevin, showing in Hunter Under Saddle and Pleasure Driving. After getting to know Paige, Marilyn quickly realized her life story would make a powerful and inspirational film.
Marilyn recalls saying to Paige, “Every day is a struggle, and you do it with such grace and a positive attitude. The world needs to hear your story.” Reflecting on the impact the film has made on herself and audience members, Marilyn asserts, “If you ever think you can’t do something, just remember Paige and her mom, Susie, and never stop trying to achieve your goals.”
The project came together over the course of a year-and-a-half. Scenes were filmed at the TCU Barn with Dukes Performance Horses, as well as a week spent in Oklahoma at the ranch belonging to Paige and her husband, Andy. Marilyn adds, “We filmed Paige showing and training at WEC, South Point, Ft. Worth Stock Show, the TCU barn, and capturing behind-the-scenes moments.” The various locations showcase Paige’s abilities to overcome her challenges in very challenging environments. Every scene is a visual reinforcement of Paige’s lifelong motto, “I am not disabled, just inconvenienced.”
