Hay Girl Hayy wins Much Anticipated NSBA 3 & Over Maiden Horse Open Western Pleasure

On Wednesday night’s much anticipated NSBA 3 & Over Maiden Horse Open Western Pleasure at A Sudden Impulse at WEC – Ocala, the crowd eagerly awaited the final placings in a very tight competition for the top three spots.

When the results were called, Hay Girl Hayy with RJ King was crowned the champion for Capital Quarter Horses LLC!

“Sasha” is from Hay Goodlookn’s first foal crop, by Hay Goodlookn and out of Johnnie On The Spot, bred by Capital Quarter Horses LLC.

Johnnie On The Spot, the AQHA High-Point Junior Western Pleasure Horse for 2018, was originally named Sasha at Masterson’s Farm, Hillary Timchak explains, but Rusty and Katie Green came up with the name Johnnie On The Spot because of the spot under her chin, “So naturally, her barn name became Johnnie. This one was special enough that I thought she should get Johnnie’s nickname, so she’s Sasha for that reason,” Hillary says.

As the owner of Hay Goodlookn, to have three offspring by “Gus” in the top ten of a maiden class, as well as the second-place horse in the class (City Limit Signs with Aaron Moses for Starland Ranch) feels “pretty dang good!” says Hillary. “Both elite horse trainers in the top two trusting a Hay Goodlookn to get in there and show for a lot of money is a big deal.”

RJ adds that Sasha has felt great since they arrived in Ocala, and he laughs that she’s been so good, he’s been a little stressed out trying not to ruin it for the class.  “She’s just an awesome horse and I always laugh about it and say, ‘you just put your quarter in and go,’ and for a three year old, that says a lot. I’ve obviously had really good success on the Hay Goodlookn horses this year and last year.  I’m very fortunate to have Capital send me horses and for their trust in our program. I’m happy to hopefully turn him into the sire we want him be, and that he can be.”

Hillary explains, “I told RJ before we showed – they’re going to pick whatever horse shows the best, and I just want this to be a good representation of the stud and what your program can do.  And there you go!”

Sasha was a little bit further behind than Up To Know Good, RJ explains, the L3 AQHA World Show 2-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure Champion with RJ from 2023 (by Gus and out of Momma Knows Best).  “She’s got such a big move and she stays real round and real correct with great expression, and I think it’s a good thing in our industry we’re going this direction (of focusing on three year olds for maiden/money classes) – that horse wouldn’t have made the two year old that it made as a three year old.”

RJ says he’s grateful he was able to take his time with her, and he thinks horses are looking a lot better because “they’re not being pushed so fast and they’re able to come at their own time, and I think it makes our job as horse trainers a lot easier when you have customers who understand that and trust that, too.”

The mare had been to only two horse shows before this achievement, and Hillary notes, “Hats off to RJ for making a horse in a short amount of time that was pretty far behind and kind of immature. RJ treated it as an individual and created a great horse.”

“And now we’re here and we couldn’t be happier,” says RJ.

Hay Girl Hayy will be going on to The Madness, and Blair and RJ will both show her, and Hillary’s mom, renowned Select Amateur Susan Roberts, is going to show Sasha in the Three Year Old Non Pro Western Pleasure.  “She’s super excited about that,” explains RJ.  “She has a lot coming in her future, and I think it will be a bright one.”
