EC Readers Share Their Lucky Charms and Must-Haves

Filed under: Current Articles,The Buzz |

At the 2022 AQHA World Show when Blake Weis won the ride-off for L3 Junior Trail with Hot Lopin Lily, the back-through obstacle was daunting, so he said he knew he had to wear his lucky shirt. He’d won the Junior Trail in the same teal shirt a few times already!
So we asked our readers this question of the week:
What is your lucky item or article of clothing that is a must when you show?

One of the photos submitted when we posed this question in the past – the lucky socks belonging to Selena Stubbs!

Rylee Morgan

I have two pair of lucky socks! One for English events and one for western! The only thing I’m beyond superstitious about.

Maddi Edwards

I have an English belt that I’ve had for forever ❤️ always comes out at the world show even though it’s destroyed.

Kelly Cummins

Special shirt I always wear day before I show….if anyone ever noticed I always wear a green shirt 😅 it’s so old.

Karen Johnson

I found 2 different heads up pennies on the morning I showed at Palomino World. My gelding won it in the open, then was reserve in the ammy. He won the Select World about a month after I put them in my boots.

Bonnie Hamlin

My exhibitor number must have a pair of numbers…77, 144, etc.🤠

Brooke Marisa

I have a lucky shirt 😊.

Amy Fortner Richmond

If it wasn’t for bad luck, I wouldn’t have any at all. So I roll with it 😎.

Bree Cooke

I have two lucky bracelets. One is a band from MareGoods. It has cute horses on the outside, and on the underside it just says I am A Badass. I always wear it under my show clothes and then flip it to the outside for showmanship! It reminds me to show with that kind of confidence. The other is a small gold band that says, “Pray Continuously”. That is something I also need for showmanship! Lol.

Shania Poney

My deceased horse’s tail hair made into a bracelet ❤️.

Laura Owen

I always wear the leather ID bracelet of the horse I’m showing.

Jamie Crofoot

I have to braid my horse myself “that morning” and listen to the same playlist.

Jaime Adams Smith

When I took my POA gelding to his first show (and my first show with my own horse in almost 20 years), I had a little braid from my POA mare I lost in 2003, along with one from my Shetland pony I lost the previous month. My POA mare usually exuded calmness, and my Shetland mare feared nothing but plastic bags and missing meals. My gelding, Shrimp, didn’t blink the entire weekend but he was brave and stood like a champ. 💜

Jessica Marie Woolsey

I have to have turquoise duct tape to tape my boots, I’ve used the same shade of lipsticks for years and I always make sure I find my trainer (who is also my mom before every pattern so I know where she is). I also try to get a number that has 48 in it. My youth number was 548 so it’s very special to me.

Kate Van Ness

I have a lucky stock pin, even though they’re so out of style, I don’t care!

Patti Bohmann

I have a rosary I like to carry in my pocket. It brings me peace when I get nervous like ready to pass out nervous in the holding pen. When I don’t have it……oh boy.

Caitlin Raysser

Omg so many. No yellow in the show pen. Socks can’t match, of they do, it all falls apart. No new boots, I have two pair of English boots in the trailer, I can’t bring myself to wear them even though my old ones are worn almost all the way thru 🤦‍♀️ if you see me wearing new boots, the old ones finally died and im prepared to have a bad ride 🤣🤣.

Kathy Green

My socks can’t match on the days I show. It started because my niece always wore mismatched socks (whether she was showing or not), so I started wearing mismatched socks on the days that she showed out of solidarity. Eventually it became my own superstition and now my socks never match when I’m showing.

Peyton Williamson

My superstition is my cleaners tags can not be taken off my clothes!

Sunny Stroede Rufo

I have a gold stock pin shaped as a ribbon with a blue stone in it that my mom gave me for my first show when I was 4 years old. It hasn’t missed a show in the 27 years since!

Harry Winston Keegan

I have a lucky pair of socks – my sister gave them to me . They say “badass.”

Peter Briggs

I found a penny the night before I won the Trail at the 1990 AJQHA world show. I had the penny in my boot when I won. I kept it there throughout my youth career. Still have it to this day.

Heather Foil

Ok don’t judge…. Hunter jumper here…. If my schooling goes great then I wear those same socks to show in.

I love schooling days and sporting some really funny shirt like “but did you die” “hold on let me over think this” “expensive and difficult”…..

Bringing humor to others in the crazy rings makes me happy.

Dana Brown

I wear the first buckle I won w my favorite (first) heart horse who is now deceased. From 1995! It’s out of style I’ve been told but I’ve won a lot wearing it!

Kaity Arthur

I don’t have any… but after reading these I think I should start! Lol.

Tiffany Williamson

Lucky color lipstick.

Hannah Hein

My lucky charm is definitely my lucky number 229; I’ll run to the show office to get it each show – been using it since I was a small fry.

Spencer Ray Chelwick

My biggest superstition is that I HAVE to put my own chaps down after I get on. I take it so seriously that in moments of high stress I have snapped at people who came over trying to help tug them down. I always feel awful and apologize noting it’s a superstition thankfully everyone understands “it’s a juju thing.” 😅

Heather Susan Duer

I won’t buy any new clothing for a large show 🙅🏼‍♀️. I’ve done it twice and feel like it jinxed me both times. So now I treat the big shows like they are any other weekend show and will only wear something new if it’s a “regular” show 😂 Also I have a lucky pair of hunt boot socks that a friend gave me and I refuse to buy new ones 🧦.

Michelle Levi Rodgers

My youngest son’s is to wear a shirt the color of the ribbon you want…when he was really small he swore that was how the judges decided what ribbon to give you.

Blakely Abbott

I sew elephant charms into all of my show outfits and refuse to go to any horse show without my elephant stuffed animal that I got the year I won the congress. Elephants have been my good luck charm for years. I always had a piece of jewelry with an elephant on it as well. The jewelry always broke or got lost so I ended up getting an elephant tattoo, to always have the luck with me.

Kelly Smith

Haha – my daughter sprays her show boots with tick spray 🤣.
