Day 2 at The Mayflower

Friday, May 5

Greetings Equine Chronicle readers! It’s Kamryn, Rachel, and Lou here after a busy day in Des Moines, Iowa. Today consisted of Showmanship, Halter, Western Pleasure and Horsemanship. The Showmanship classes started bright and early and, following it, was the Halter. Some of today’s big winners in the Showmanship and Halter included Elizabeth Forney with One Hot Big Leaguer, Larry Spratto with Just That Lucky, Phyllis Steffen with A Krymsun Investment, and Mallory Vroegh with Krymsun Belle.

The Youth 14-18 Showmanship showed a total of 24. As today went on, Halter was done by 4:00 pm. After that, there was an auction that consisted of baked goods and items for a fundraiser for the Iowa Amateur Association. The most exciting item to be auctioned off was a 9 x 13″ rubarb cake. The rubarb cake went for over $1,000. Yes, $1,000! It was a great event that got people together for some great fun! Also, because Cinco De Mayo was celebrated today, there was a walking Taco bar for all to eat!

Exciting winners of the Western Pleasure and Horsemanship included Shelley Graham with Jet Roddin Zippo, Jessica Stalder with Slipmeazip, Cameryn Bellar with A Special Invite, Elizabeth Juette with Huntified, Johnna Letchworth with Krymsun Kryptonite, and Sydney Riden with Chips Lucky Coupe. Happy Cinco De Mayo and congrats to all exhibitors today!

It's Derby Day!

Day 3

Saturday, May 6

It is Derby Day! Here at the horse show in Des Moines, Iowa, things started off great with a hot pancake breakfast provided for everyone! This was a great set-up and many people enjoyed it. Today was a day that started with a split arena of Trail, and following was the Western Riding, Ranch Riding, Hunter under Saddle and Equitation. The Senior Trail had 32 horses shown, and the Level 1 consisted of 27 shown.

There was an Exhibitors’ Party in celebration of the Kentucky Derby today! There were about 15 men and women that had fashionable hats that were voted on, along with drinks for exhibitors to enjoy! Purina also did random drawings throughout the day for people to receive a rose to celebrate Derby Day as well. Tonight was a great night for exhibitors to relax and be able to watch the Derby with friends because the show ended early.

18361042_1537321322976410_1244400320_nThanks to Mark Harrell Horse Shows, Kathy Avolt and the Iowa Quarter Horse Association, today was very relaxed and enjoyable because of all the fun that went on! Happy Derby Day!
