Homebred TB Laredo Continues Bradshaw Program Maiden Stakes Success at Congress

For the team behind TB Laredo, it was a special win in the Yearling Maiden Open Stallions Halter Stakes Limited at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress.

Shown by Jarrell Jackson for owner Terry Bradshaw, the homebred yearling earned the title and $6,420 in the class, presented by English Quarter Horses, Headley Quarter Horses, J.L. Robinson Quarter Horses, Terry Bradshaw Quarter Horses and The Equine Chronicle.

The win carried extra meaning because of TB Laredo’s ties to horses already close to the program.

“We had a full sister to him that we just adored, and he’s by Initials Only, one of Terry’s horses that was very special to him,” Jackson said. “He was also bred and raised right there at the house.”

The Bradshaw program also found success in the maiden stakes last year, making TB Laredo a natural next prospect for the class.

“We love the maiden class,” Jackson said. “We had a colt up here last year in the maiden and were lucky enough to win it. It’s especially meaningful to win today because we lost Initials Only. He has a real warm place in all of our hearts, so this is a special moment.”

For Jackson, the maiden format also gives breeders and owners a chance to develop young horses with longevity in mind rather than rushing them into the show pen.

“We have to give back to our industry,” Jackson said. “By making a maiden class like this where they haven’t been shown, it takes some of the pressure off the younger horses. I really think the maidens are becoming more popular because of classes like this.”

He also credited the group of sponsors who have worked together to support and grow these classes.

“The Headleys, the Bradshaws, The Equine Chronicle, and Mr. Robinson all make this thing happen,” Jackson said. “It’s a really good group of people on the sponsorship list. They’re open-minded, and they’re not scared to think outside the box, which is important for the future of these classes.”

TB Laredo’s size and physical development were among the qualities Jackson believed helped set him apart in the stallion division. However, the colt’s team has been deliberate about giving him time to mature.

“He is overly big, and he’s not even fully mature yet,” Jackson said. “His sister was big, too. We didn’t pull her out of the pasture until she was a 3-year-old because of it.”

Jackson had TB Laredo in mind for the maiden stakes well before this year’s Congress, but resisted pushing the colt too quickly to get there.

“I picked him out for the maiden last year and only pushed him far enough for this,” Jackson said. “He’s had time, his legs are good, and I think he’ll have some long-term success, too.”
