There are competitors who chase championships.
And then there are horsemen who spend a lifetime chasing something much bigger.
Shelly Boyle has accumulated enough titles, trophies, and neck ribbons to satisfy nearly anyone. Congress Queen. AQHA High Point Champion. One of the most decorated Amateur Hunter Under Saddle exhibitors in AQHA history. Most recently, she captured the Congress Championship in Amateur Pleasure Driving with a horse that had learned to drive only months earlier, then followed it with AQHA World Championships in both Amateur Pleasure Driving (with Boyle) and Junior Pleasure Driving under trainer Marion Troyer.
But spend even a few minutes talking with Boyle, and it becomes clear that the ribbons are simply the byproduct.
Ask her what matters most, and she’ll talk about patience. About learning from every horse. About surrounding herself with people she trusts. About putting the horse first and enjoying the journey with barn friends.
“I do this because I love this,” she says. “I love the horses, the process, the work.”
It’s a philosophy that has guided her from the day a nine-year-old girl climbed aboard her first horse, Jade, through decades of success at the industry’s biggest stages–and one that continues to shape every goal she sets today.
More than three decades later, Boyle is still chasing the same feeling that first hooked her as a child. The horses may have changed and the stages have grown larger, but her passion for learning, competing, and continually challenging herself remains unchanged.
