It was a golden-haired girl in a golden outfit aboard a golden horse that claimed the golden globe this afternoon in Western Riding at the 2014 AQHYA World Show. Deanna Green rode Blazenmytroublesaway, aka “Buttercup,” to the win in the 75 entry class with a score of 237 1/2.

Last year, Green and Buttercup were named Reserve in the class. Still, despite their previous success, she didn’t want to count her golden chicks before they’d hatched.

“I did not have any expectations,” she says. “I just wanted to go in and have a good ride. All I wanted was for us to do good. That’s all you can ask for.”

“She’s really soft and very obedient. She always wants to do what you want her to do, and I think that’s a big part of the class, the obedience part of it.”

After the first lead change, Green knew Buttercup was set up to perform an excellent pattern. However, she never imagined she would score quite so high.

“Once I loped off, I could tell she was wanting to be really good,” she says. “It’s pattern 1, so you get to do your line first. Then, we did our crossovers, and she didn’t try anything. She just wanted to be really good. I thought [I had plus changes], but you never really know. I’m partial, because she’s my horse!”

“That’s the highest score I’ve ever gotten. I never even thought that was possible. I’m so excited.”

Green and Buttercup have two prior Reserve World Championship titles, one in Western Riding and one in Western Pleasure. Today’s win is their first World Championship finish at the Youth World Show. As she exited the pen, her father was waiting to celebrate.

“He said, ‘We did it!’ He was crying and my mom was crying and Katie was crying. Everyone was crying! It’s crazy. I’m so excited. I can’t believe it actually happened. It hasn’t hit me yet.”

Green and Buttercup only get a moments rest before they will head back in the pen to compete in the 192 entry Horsemanship preliminaries this afternoon.

“This is my first year for horsemanship, and I’m really excited,” she says. “It’s really fun. I think it makes her better at doing everything else. I think it’s helped her western pleasure by getting her mind on other stuff. It’s different.”

In addition to Horsemanship with Buttercup, Green will also be competing in Cutting aboard Platinum Bob. Making the switch from Western Pleasure to Cutting is certainly a big leap.

“They’re so different,” she says. “You have to think fast, and you’re on your toes a lot more. I couldn’t pick [a favorite]. I love all of it. There’s nothing else I’d rather do.”
