Three Days of the Horse During “A Legacy of Legends” in Texas in March

“What we’re doing is important to the horse,” said Buck Brannaman speaking about A Legacy of Legends and the 2015 Gathering March 6-8 in Fort Worth.

The annual event honors two of the greatest and most influential horsemen of all time – Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance. And like these two legends, it’s all about the horse.

“Tom and Ray worked so hard all of their lives to promote a deeper understanding of the horse,” said Carolyn Hunt, who along with Brannaman co-founded of A Legacy of Legends. “We want their teachings to keep getting passed along the way they intended.”

Brannaman’s story and the role that Hunt played in helping him as a human and a horseman is well known. But despite his notoriety and the crowds Brannaman draws, he insists that the Gathering isn’t about any one person.

“It’s about all of us who actually worked with Ray and Tom, showing what we’ve spent our lifetime learning,” he said.

This sharing of experience and understanding, Brannaman said, is how the legacy of these legendary horsemen will continue and how their teachings will get passed on.

This year’s list of returning presenters includes Buster McLaury, Peter Campbell and Mindy Bower for trailer loading demonstrations. Buck and Reata Brannaman, as in the past, will conduct the colt starting. Jaton Lord and National Snaffle Bit Association Futurity Champion Nick Dowers will share their reined cow horse expertise. Anthony Desreaux, who participated in the Australian Gathering in 2014, will offer the Fort Worth crowd campdrafting demonstrations.

New to the event, National Cutting Horse Association Hall of Famer Doug Jordan will offer daily cutting presentations. Clinician and Versatility Ranch Horse Champion Joe Wolter will also be making his first appearance at the Gathering, with daily presentations on horsemanship, cow work and roping.

Not only an enriching learning experience, the Gathering also offers serious students of the horse an opportunity to meet and exchange insights with the presenters and lots of other great horsemen, artists, craftsmen, gear makers and equine industry leaders.

Proceeds from the event are used to support the A Legacy of Legends scholarship program.

“Ray acknowledged a debt to the horse for all of the mistakes he made before he met Tom Dorrance,” Carolyn said of the program that pairs students with mentors who directly worked with Ray or Tom. “We hope to give others the same gift that Tom gave Ray. They both strived to make it a better deal for the horse and we want to be sure that continues.”
