The Horned Frogs used a 5-0 sweep in Reining to propel themselves to victory.

SPRINGTOWN, Texas – No. 8 TCU opened its season with a bang, sweeping No. 7 Baylor in Reining Saturday afternoon to secure an 11-9 season-opening victory over the Bears at Turning Point Ranch.

With the conference victory, the Horned Frogs moved to 1-0 overall on the young season. The Western team secured the Purple and White’s win with a dominating 8-2 victory over Baylor.

It was the Reining team who did most of the damage, sweeping the Bears, 5-0, which marked the first time in the all-time series. Chantz Stewart led the way for the Frogs with a 73.5-70.5 decision over Shelby Jackson. With the victory, the sophomore earned her first MOP honors of the season. The MOP accolade marked only the second time in her young career she has earned the honor. Newcomer Shelby St. Hilaire and returning All-America honoree Alexi Child both scored 71’s to earn points for the Purple and White. Freshman Brook Boyle and Colorado native Katelyn Gray were just as dominate, upending Katie Berg and Elizabeth Shank, respectively, to secure the sweep.

In Horsemanship, freshman Megan McMullen had a strong first outing as a Horned Frog, edging out Mary Brown, 73.5-73. Rylee Morgan was also successful, setting the standard with TCU’s first point in Horsemanship by downing Parris Rice, 70.5-66.5. All-American Erin Gillette also had a strong opening outing, defeating Jessica Leach, 68.5-66, which allowed TCU to secure a 3-2 decision.

On the Hunt Seat side, the Frogs fell by an overall score of 7-3 Saturday to move to 0-1 on the season. TCU had a strong outing in Equitation on the Flat, but fell to Baylor in the discipline, 3-2. Senior Caitlin Ader scored a point for the Frogs defeating Paige Parker with an 84-82 decision, while Diamantis was not far behind earning TCU’s second point over Lindsey Otis, 82-78.

In Equitation over Fences, Molly Peddicord had an impressive first outing as a Horned Frog earning an 83 to defeat Ashley Ann McGehee’s 77 on her first career ride at TCU. Senior captain Courtney Motz also had a strong showing, but dropped a hard fought 84-80 decision to Alicia Gasser.

The Horned Frogs will host Kansas State on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Turning Point Ranch. Meet start time is 11 a.m CT.
