SmartPak’s Senior Horse Resource Center

SmartPak is celebrating the Senior Horse throughout the month of May

Whether you’ve been partners for years or you’re both turning a new page together, you want to give your senior horse the care and support he deserves. SmartPak is dedicating the month of May to celebrating these special horses with everything you need to make his golden years truly golden.

“My horse and I have grown up together so I always want to make sure that I’m doing everything I can to keep him feeling his best, even as he gets older,” said Kerri Walsh, Senior Marketing Manager at SmartPak. “Many SmartPakers, like myself, are caring for a senior on a daily basis. We understand what has gone into building this special bond, which is why we are excited to share some of the tips and strategies we have used to keep our senior horses in the best shape possible.”

Horses are living longer and longer, so caring for seniors brings some special considerations. SmartPak developed the Senior Horse Resource Center, filled with informational articles and videos from experts, to give you the tools you need to help support your senior horse on a variety of topics such as general care, to nutrition and targeted support.

You may be wondering – how old is a senior? Nowadays, chronological age may not be the best indicator of when a horse is senior, but rather his physiological age. It’s important to work alongside your veterinarian to best understand your horse’s physiological functions, like digestive efficiency and immune status, to help determine his status and put the right plan in place for your horse’s individual needs.

Once you’ve worked with your veterinarian, the Senior Horse Resource Center is a great place to learn more about those physiological changes, and how to help your horse cope with such changes through diet, preventive care, exercise and other management changes.  SmartPak also offers a variety of senior-specific supplements, in addition to various tack and supply items, that can benefit your horse.

“I’m lucky enough to say that I’m still able to travel and show with my horse Comet – he’s 22 years old and I’ve had in my life for 20 years,” said Kayleigh Davenport, Assistant Buyer at SmartPak. “I keep Comet going strong with SmartStride Senior pellets for his joints, along with digestive and respiratory support. I want to keep him feeling his best for years to come, because even in their older age, there is still so much our senior horses can teach us.”
