Despite a bit of rough weather, the 2018 Little River Circuit persevered, delivering a fun event for all, May 18-20 at their new location, the Boys & Girls Homes of North Carolina Exhibition Center in Lake Waccamaw. There was considerable excitement about the move this year to the picturesque facility that’s located on a 140 acre campus housing a working farm, chapel, North Carolina Public Charter School, and “sanctuary community” for at-risk youth.

At the facility, young mothers (aged 12-18), pregnant teens, and children, who are in the custody of the Department of Social Services, live with residential counselors in cottage style homes where they have the opportunity to learn and grow participating in activities that build confidence and life skills, like harvesting vegetables, growing greenhouse plants, collecting pecans, and participating in a weekly Horsemanship program with trail rides.

Often fondly referred to as the “Little Sister” of the Martinganza Quarter Horse Show and Futurity, the Little River Circuit is hosted by the North Carolina Quarter Horse Association District IV and was judged by Lori Gingrich, Pete McAlister, Kimberly Leiter, and Daren Wright.

“We worked with the show schedule, our judges were fantastic and worked with us, and we gave everyone a chance to ride and warm up between storms and showers,” says Show Manager Susan Daniels. “We ended up with a total close to 1,200 entries for the four judges, and we’re happy with that, with the weather we had.”

“Our biggest accomplishment this past weekend was everyone said they had a GREAT time and lots of fun, and you can’t ask for any better than that. This was the 42nd year for our Little River Circuit.  It has had several locations over the years, but it has always been a fun show.”
