Katie Green showed All Nett to win the 46,500 Added SOQHA Three Year Old and Over Novice Horse Western Pleasure on Friday, earning $20,000 for owner Susan Johns. They were joined by additional NSBA futurity champions in Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle and Trail throughout the day.

“He just has some intangible qualities that you just don’t see very often,” Katie said of All Nett. “He’s exotic and beautiful. He just moves so soft and yet he’s super strong. It’s a great combination. He jogs, he lopes, and it’s impossible not to look at him.”
The Madness was just the second show for the gelding. “He won the Maiden Three Year Old and Over Open Western Pleasure class at the Orange Blossom Classic a couple of weeks ago,” Katie said.
By Nothing But Nett, whose barn name is Steph, it was natural that the three year old gelding would be called ‘Curry,’ continuing the homage to Golden State Warriors NBA point guard Stephen Curry. “We’ve had him since the start,” Katie said. “He’ll go on and do the All Around events maybe next year in Arizona.” The Green team has seen success working with Susan Johns and trainers Deanna and Jim Searles, bringing horses up from the Western Pleasure futurities through their All Around careers.
Earning the Limited rider title in the class was Dangerouss Woman, shown by Garrett Streit for SSH Partnership. The duo also placed fourth overall in the class, earning $2,500 for the Limited win and $3,500 for the Open placing. It was the second Madness win for Dangerouss Woman and Garrett, who also won the $5,000 Limited Horse Open Western Pleasure earlier in the show.
In the $2,500 Added Maturity $10,000 Limited Horse Western Pleasure, Adam Mathis piloted Rip Roarin Good to the win for Nettie Olsen, earning $1,402.50.
“Rip is a saint,” Adam said. “He is a Novice Youth Western Pleasure horse and a Novice Amateur Select horse, and he’s six years old. He was just honest. He stayed with me the entire trip. He’s easy to get ready and enjoys being a show horse, so we were able to show that off.
“I love this Limited Horse class for a lot of different reasons. More than anything, it gives us a division to take a horse that maybe fell through the cracks or wasn’t ready to play with that Open Maturity the ability to get seasoned and show what they can do. I think it’s a viable part of our industry and we have to have it. Any time we get an opportunity to show in it, we do.”
“I absolutely loved everything about their go today,” added Nettie. “I love this horse. He was down at Mike Hachtel’s and I saw him there. I told him I wanted to buy him, but Mike told me I couldn’t buy him. Then life happened and I was able to lease him for a year. This horse gave me the confidence to go on and ride other horses with Adam and Paisley. I’ve showed him for a year, then my grandson Brock showed him and now he’s with David, so he’s been a real Olsen family horse.”
In just her second ride aboard Wanna Meet Sherlock, Katie Piper showed to win in the $1,500 Added $2,500 Limited Horse/2,500 Limited Rider Western Pleasure for owner Chris Hull.
“This is a five year old mare that Chris just bought in February from Brian Cox,” Katie said. “We were horse shopping in Venice, and Chad called and said we needed to come down to the arena and see this horse. So Chris rode her, and the way Chris sat on her and the way the mare carried her around, she just sold herself to us.
“Brian does such a great job getting his horses trained up, and so everything was just there, we’ve just built on it. She’s just a sweetheart. She just lets you show her. Everything I asked her to do, she did. She just really wants to be a show horse. She was easy, fun.
“Chris has only shown her a couple of times because she got sick, but they will show in the Amateur Select classes.”
Eleanor Ott is known for her All Around horse, Hez Rainey Made, but she was determined to get a Hunter Under Saddle horse she could start on her own. The result of her efforts was a win in the $1,000 Added Three Year Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle Futurity with Southern Circles.
“I’ve always wanted to do the Hunter Under Saddle futurities, because it’s my favorite class,” Eleanor said. “I convinced Beckey Schooler to let me get an English horse, and I really wanted to do the training myself. We bought him in Michigan. The day after we got him, during the eclipse, I put the first ride on him. It was sort of a sign, because he has a little moon on his head. Dakota Rohr, who is Beckey’s assistant trainer, has helped me a ton, but I’ve put most of the work on him, so it’s been very special.
“This (The Madness) was his very first horse show that he ever went to last year, because we bought him a year and a week ago today. He’s been growing a lot, so we decided to save him for his three year old year. He’s only been shown about three times so far.
Tommy is by Its A Southern Thing and out of Lazy Lopen Lindy, a Lazy Loper mare. “We call him Tommy Tomato. My other horse is Tator Tot so he is Tommy Tomato. He’s so sweet. I just love him,” Eleanor said.
Senior Trail at the Madness was an all-day affair with an eight-hour block of time on the course for exhibitors. A $2,500 Senior Trail Futurity with a Limited Rider bonus was held concurrent with the AQHA Level 2 and Level 3 class.
Alex Bryner and VS Blurred Lines earned the Open futurity title and $1,843.75 for owners Sherry and David Patterson. “’Robin’ is six years old, so this is her first year as a Senior Trail horse. I like her flow, and she is usually really careful. She has a great topline, and we really love her because she usually looks great out there.
“Today we were really in synch. Every pole was high in there, but she was super careful and really got it done. We scored a 421.5, so I can’t complain about that. Sherry Patterson and her husband Butch own her together. Butch shows her in Western Pleasure, and Sherry has just started showing her in Trail, and they are learning it together. This is probably the third show that we’ve done Western Riding with her as well. She has a bright All Around future ahead.
“She was with Justin and Joy Wheeler, and they showed her in Western Pleasure. Justin also showed her in the Maiden Trail last year in Ocala, and we bought her after that. We love her.”
Melissa Jones and Two Ziplines were the reserve champions in the Open futurity and earned the Limited Rider title for owner Katie Kopf. They received $1,327.50 for the reserve award and an additional $300 for the Limited Rider bonus.
“Leroy is ten years old now,” Melissa said. “He’s very dependable and he usually really tries hard. He may not always get it right but he tries so hard. There was a different triangle that we’ve never done before and I thought his footwork in that triangle was really good. Being a maneuver that had never done before, it was challenging but also fun to do something different.
The most important focus of his show career is being an Amateur horse for Katie. She’s had a lot of success with him. She won an AQHA world championship with him, and most recently she won the Non-Pro portion of the Trail Challenge in Ocala. Leroy is a solid citizen, and he really tries for us.”
The Madness continues through Sunday, May 11. The weekend’s schedule includes on Saturday – Trail and the $11,500 Added Non-Pro Trail Futurity and $5,000 Added Limited Non-Pro Trail Futurity bonus, the Dad’s Walk Jog Western Pleasure and the $54,000 Added Equine Chronicle Three Year Old and Older Maiden Horse Western Pleasure; while Sunday the show concludes with Western Riding, Horsemanship and Western Pleasure classes, including the $1,500 Added Three Year Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure and $1,000 Limited Non-Pro Western Pleasure.
