The first class of the day is tough – you likely stayed late practicing, and definitely were up early to be ready, and so was your horse. All this did not deter the team of Taryn Ross and PS Kats Gold Piece, who topped a class of 30 in Rookie Youth Showmanship at the 2025 AQHA West L1 Championships!
They followed it up with a silver trophy as Reserve Champions in their next class, L1 Youth 14-18 Showmanship.
The two triumphs were formidable feats, and Taryn explains she’s had “Ty” about three years, and today marked her first big wins with him. What made the difference?
“My trainers, Craig and Whitney (Vicars) are putting in endless hours helping me,” she explains. “My mom and grandma helping me get here have made a difference, and just confidence, really.”
She says what she loves about Ty is that he has an open mind to anything they do, and they have equitation and horsemanship to also look forward to at this show!

Later in the main arena at South Point, a class of 34 L1 Youth Ranch Trail exhibitors faced a challenging course, at when results were announced, the champions were Troy Dever and Doctor Vooodoo.
Troy says this is his first championship in ranch trail, and when asked about what went well, he says the ride felt really good. “He was really good over his lope overs,” Troy explains, and that’s exactly what he and “Simba” have been focusing on improving at home. Next for the team, it’s on to youth world!
