From Jennifer Horton, Mayflower Volunteer Show Chair:

“The Iowa Quarter Horse Association is celebrating our 75th anniversary this year. So I challenged Tim Kimura to include a “75” in the trail course design for us. He understood the assignment 🙂

The Mayflower brought some fresh ideas again this year with our Mayflower Money, putting $2,000 added money into 12 classes awarded based on the circuit award placings for the top 3 to earn cash.

Also new this year was my Trainer Barn Challenge, where trainers could sign themselves up with all the horses that showed under their barn. We added the points earned and divided their totals by the number of horses for the average. Hannah Lind with Show Horses by Shannon & Hannah won the Turtlebox Ranger Speaker and Lucky Chuck Socks sponsored by bar H Photography. Since Hannah was an IQHA member, she also earns a $75 cash bonus from IQHA.

Our Random Acts of Prizes returned with a huge amount of random draw prizes throughout the weekend, including gallons of 100X Equine Gut-X and gift certificates to popular local restaurants.
Our IQHYA Mom & Dad Showmanship returned with Brena Adkins winning the Richard & Sue Voss Memorial Trophy, sponsored by Jill Voss Blieu and Anna Voss Dehrkoop.

The headline competition of the Mayflower was my Purina Western Riding/Ranch Riding Team Shootout, with $1,000 added from Purina. Ten exhibitors entered the western riding portion, ten exhibitors entered the ranch riding portion and we drew them into teams of 2 to compete on their respective pattern.

Spencer Groth – Chicslikemychocolate – ranch riding.

Scores were added together to determine team scores from two judges and Spencer Groth and Robert Schmitz were the champions. The top team split $800 and prizes from Purina.

Robert Schmitz – Whattaretheodds – western riding.

This was the second team shootout competition that I designed. Our first one was our City Trail/Ranch Trail Team Shootout, which returns to our IQHA Scenic City Summer Show in Iowa Falls over the 4th of July weekend. Custom Tails provides the $1,000 added in our Trail Shootout.

Duane Van Horn celebrated his 95th birthday, which is coming up on May 25, with another circuit championship on his mare I Wanta Rock in the amateur walk/trot western pleasure. Duane is everyone’s favorite cheerleader!”

Duane says, “Since I started showing again after losing my dear wife Beverly, five years ago I’ve had 85 wins 18 circuit championships and 7 IQHA championships at almost 95 years old .I can’t believe it myself.”

Duane Van Horn turns 95 on May 25th.
