Thanks to grant funding provided through the American Quarter Horse Foundation, the 2013-2014 equine research grant recipients will begin projects October 1, 2013 and are scheduled for completion on September 30, 2014.

Study topics include navicular syndrome, chronic respiratory disease, joint trauma in young performance horses, equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) and contagious equine metritis (CEM). These studies provide the building blocks for discoveries that save and improve horses’ lives while also arming practitioners and veterinarians with the valuable knowledge necessary for prevention, cures and overall better horse health. Research summaries for all recent projects are available on the Foundation’s website.

Research Proposal Deadline for 2014-2015 project funding is December 1, 2013. AQHA and the Foundation encourage the submission of a diverse range of projects related to the health, welfare and utility of the horse, and of importance to the horse owner and the horse industry. Funding decisions are based on the project’s scientific merit, clinical application and/or potential benefit to the horse and horse industry. Grants are available for general research, as well as specialized grant funding in the areas of equine head trauma through the Refrigerator Fund, and the Young Investigator Award, which offers funding for research performed by masters- or Ph.D.-level graduate students, DVM-/VMD-level residency interns or postdoctoral researchers in training.
