When Katie Jo Jones came to Robin Frid in 2021 with a list of goals she wanted to achieve, included in that list was finding the right horse.
Though Im ExtremelySchmancy only did the pleasure at the time, Katie Jo says she trusted Robin when he said the 2018 brown mare by Extremely Hot Chips and out of Im Fancy Schmancy (by Batt Man), bred by Jeri Kay Lockwood, was “the one.”
Katie Jo’s goals were not only met – they were transcended as they brought “Sassy” along in her all around career, and Katie Jo discovered the kindest and most honest horse she’d owned. “She always delivers whatever is asked of her and is incredibly athletic. We purchased her as a 3 year old and then put all the classes on her which has been so rewarding. Any goal that I set for us, she always showed up. I love the horsemanship, and I think she loves the horsemanship as much as I do,” she says.
Together, the duo achieved Katie Jo’s dreams and then some, including two of her biggest dreams: winning the world in the Amateur Horsemanship and winning the Amateur all around at the AQHA World Show.
In fact, their 2024 show year alone included winning the titles of 2024 All Around Amateur at the AQHA World Show, 2024 All Around Amateur at the All American Quarter Horse Congress, 2024 AQHA World and Congress Champion in Amateur Horsemanship, and 2024 AQHA Highpoint Amateur Horsemanship and Performance Mares, among many other accolades.
Trainer Robin Frid reveals, “First off I want to express my eternal gratitude to Katie Jo and her trust in our program for so many years. She had complete faith in letting us find the right horse and to bring her talent along slowly. I truly feel that her patience is the main reason that Sassy turned into the outstanding show horse that she is.
It’s now time for that exceptional horse that made Katie Jo’s dreams come true to follow suit for her new owner, Amateur Karen Jorgenson.
Katie Jo explains, “I took this year off to focus on my family as we welcomed our daughter, Turner Elizabeth, into the world on July 8th. I haven’t been able to get to Texas this year to ride Sassy due to my pregnancy and the new baby. I was planning on attending the Florida Gold/Gulf Coast circuits to kick off 2026 and get back in the pen, but when Robin called and told me about Karen, I knew it was the perfect fit!”
Sassy took to Karen right away, and it was as if she was filling the void from Katie Jo’s absence the past year. “I wanted someone to love her as much as I do. She and Karen bonded right away. Sassy also loves Robin, so the icing on top is that she gets to stay in the barn and continue to live in the barn princess stall. I am so excited to see what Sassy and Karen achieve together and will always be their biggest fan!!”
Robin concurs, “The thing with Sassy is that she can be good with just about anyone; she really is that special, but if she likes you, her talent goes to a whole other level! I could tell as soon as Karen rode her that sassy felt she was one of her people. With that, I have seen very few horses that can rise to her level!”
Katie Jo shares her gratitude as she hands over the reins. “I would like to thank Robin and Jenny Frid for finding Sassy and developing her into the horse that she is. I would also like to thank my Mom for her unwavering support, the countless videos and pep talks, and always believing in us. Lastly, I thank God for allowing me to own a horse like Sassy Mae and having the ride of a lifetime.”
And as for Karen – her incredible backstory will be shared by The Equine Chronicle this month, but as one might imagine, she’s very excited for this next chapter. “All the stars aligned to make it possible… and when I met her I knew she was the perfect choice for me… she was my dream all around western horse.”
