English and Western NSBA futurity classes saw champions crowned on Tuesday, including the Open and Limited Open Three Year Old Hunter Under Saddle Futurity and the $5,000 Limited Horse Maturity Western Pleasure, as The Madness portion of the circuit got underway at the World Equestrian Center in Wilmington, Ohio.
From NSBA:
Dakota Rohrs piloted You Proof to win the Open and Limited Open Three Year Old Hunter Under Saddle Futurity. With the two wins, Dakota earned a total of $961 for owner Matthew Westbrook. No one cheered more loudly than her boss, Beckey Schooler, who also showed in the class.
“Beckey Schooler and Todd Yoder bred and raised ‘Conway,’” Dakota explained. The chestnut gelding is by Best Brew At The Bar and out of Lope Up Like Dis (by Machine Made). “The Westbrooks bought him as a yearling and took him home to grow up because I understand he was kind of small then. But when he came back near the end of his two year old year, he was pretty big. He’s just so good. He behaves and he’s a real fun guy to show. I think he’s very pretty.
“He’ll go to the Premier next and I think we’ll just keep rolling in the Three Year Old Open and Limited Open classes. He has a Non-Pro part to his career this year too. Mackenzie Westbrook showed him here at the Madness in the Amateur Hunter Under Saddle and was third, and he was really good for her too.”
Dakota has been working for Beckey’s Place since February of 2024, and has been full-time with the training barn since she graduated from high school last year. “We have a lot of Hunter Under Saddle horses right now, so I’ve been recruited to help show and coach them, but I’ll also ride some Western horses as well,” she said.
Winning her first NSBA trophy was a special moment. “I really can’t believe it,” she said. “It seems unreal, especially to win both divisions of the class.”
Garrett Streit had a ‘Dangerouss’ mount for the competition when he showed Dangerouss Woman to win the $5,000 Limited Horse Open Western Pleasure. It was a ride that he says was worth the wait.
“We bought her at the Congress as a two year old from Brent Garringer and she’s four now. I showed her at the Virginia Maiden for the first time, and now here, so this is just her second horse show,” Garrett said. The mare is by Machine Made out of Invited By The Lady.
“We call her Celine. We honestly loved her at first sight. I had texted Brent and asked if he had any horses for sale, and we just really loved her. We just thought that she was the one for me, she fits me to a T.
“It’s been a long process, but it’s been worth it. It’s really great to have these Limited classes for horses to come along at their own pace. I think today I just finally got out of my own way and let her flow her own way. I quit trying to over-manage and micro-manage and just did what I like about her. She has a great profile. Some people tell me to cut her long mane off, but we’ve stayed true and I think it gives her personality.”
He noted that he and Celine will continue to show in Limited and Level 1/Green Western Pleasure at major shows this year, and potentially she may have a Non-Pro component to her career as well.
The Madness continues through Sunday, May 11. Wednesday’s show schedule will include Trail Western Riding and Ranch classes with NSBA futurities that include an $11,500 added Green Junior Trail and $2,500 Junior Trail, both with Limited rider bonuses, as well as the SOQHA Three Year Old and Over Novice Horse Hunter Under Saddle Slot Class which includes bonuses for Limited riders and Maiden horses.
