The show was the first event of a three-part series that brings competitors from around the country to escape the wintery weather with a warm respite in Florida. The 2018 Florida Gold Coast took place December 28-31 at the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center with a judges’ pool consisting of Jennifer Leckey, John Boxell, Jennifer Goss, GiGi Bailey, Carly Parks, Andrea Simons, Clint Fullerton, Tracy Willis, Brad Kearns, Cindy Rucker, Stephen Stephens, and Terry Cross.

Kayla Kohler of Osteen, Florida, trained the international contingent that participated in Trail, Western Pleasure, and Horsemanship. Two of the riders, Roei Katarivas and Ofir Bouni, previously competed in Florida. However, it was Tal Pridan and Noa Katarivas’ first experience at the horse show, as well as in America.

Today’s EC Photo of the Day comes from Lisa McGowan and features her father, Mike, with his American Quarter Horse, Genuine Blackburn. Mike doesn’t let the fact that he’s a paraplegic stop him from riding, loving, and caring for his three American Quarter Horses and one American Paint Horse. He rides and works with his horses every day. One of his favorite trips is to Wyoming in August to ride in the mountains where he also serves as a guide.

Pay attention during winter months to water tank heaters and heated buckets—they continue to generate heat even if there is no water present, which can cause the plastic to melt and a fire to ignite bedding and hay. If you are using electrical cords, make sure that they are professional grade, inspected often and are not overloaded. Keep lights caged and only use lights that are designed for barn use.
