While riding in the groomed arenas of the 65-acre Del Mar Horse Park, you can almost smell the salty twang of the Pacific Ocean wafting in from a mere two miles away. Well-appointed with a 275’ by 375’ grand prix field surrounded by 1,400 permanent spectator seats, a second grass field, four sand rings, and a lighted indoor arena, the Del Mar Horse Park is the perfect location for AQHA competitors to enjoy some fun in the sun at the 2015 Sun & Surf circuit this week.

With the capacity to accommodate 1,200 horses, the complex is ready to host an influx of competitors during six shows over the next four days. The show kicked off today with Hunter Under Saddle, Equitation, Western Pleasure, and Horsemanship classes in Arena 1, while over in Arena 2, Trail classes took place. The same schedule will repeat on Saturday. On Friday and Sunday, Showmanship, Halter, Pleasure Driving, Western Riding, Ranch Horse Pleasure, and Trail are on the schedule.

Judging the show this year are Mike Hay, Buddy Fisher, Chris Jones, Elizabeth Baker, Chris Thompson, and Randy Wilson. In addition to judging the regular AQHA-approved classes, these judges will determine the winners in NSBA dual-approved classes and NSBA futurities.

Each year, this show is a favorite among competitors because of its close distance to San Diego’s beautiful beaches, fine dining, and fabulous shopping in Del Mar and La Jolla. After a full day of competition, take a sightseeing trip to Mission Bay or play a round of golf at one of the world class courses nearby. If you have a day off from the competition, be sure to visit Sea World!
