The versatility of ex-racehorses will take center stage June 21-22 in Oklahoma City at the Sport of Kings Challenge. Hosted by Remington Park, former racehorses encompassing four breeds—Thoroughbreds, Paints, Quarter Horses and Appaloosas—will gather at Remington Park Racetrack to showcase their skills in hunter/jumper, dressage, Western dressage and barrel racing.

Great prizes, bragging rights and cash high-point awards are up for grabs, and Paint ex-racehorses are encouraged to participate. Horses are not required to have actually started in a race, but all must carry a lip tattoo to indicate racing was at least a goal at one point in their careers. APHA is a proud sponsor of the Sport of Kings Challenge.

“Many Paint racehorses enjoy second careers after their time on the track—their great minds, versatility and athleticism make the transition pretty seamless, and a number of top performance horses first found success in racing,” Director of Racing Karen Utecht said. “We hope the Sport of Kings Challenge will help showcase the talent of ex-racehorses, and that of Paint Horses in particular.”

Cash prizes will be offered in a number of categories and divisions: Youth, Amateur and Open in flat classes (Western and English), green hunter, hunter, jumper, dressage, Western dressage and barrel racing. Entry forms and rules are available online.

The weekend-long competition also includes a clinic, silent auction, exhibitor dinner, food truck derby and other exciting events. Proceeds go to Thoroughbred Athletes, a 501c3 non-profit organization in Guthrie, Oklahoma, dedicated to the rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming of former racehorses.
