Solid Paint-breds who carry a Paint pattern gene are invited to show with their colorful counterparts in challenge and sweepstakes classes at the 2017 APHA World Championship Show—follow these steps to take advantage of this new opportunity and $40,000 in cash and prizes in these special events:

  • Order your DNA test. Testing must be completed through APHA at an approved lab—UC Davis (submit the DNA order form, select “Color/Pattern Panel) or Etalon Diagnostics (order directly through the Etalon website, using $139 APHA option).
  • Enter World Show challenges/sweepstakes classes. Most of these added money events are open to solids that carry a pattern gene; exceptions are sweepstakes that run concurrently with world championship classes or when a solid Paint-bred sweepstakes event is offered. The 2017 World Show pre-entry deadline is August 1 to avoid late fees, but entries are accepted until 5 p.m. the day before the class.

I want to do this, but I don’t have my DNA results yet!

Just enter the applicable classes now to qualify for the pre-entry fee rates; late fees apply after August 1, but entries are accepted until 5 p.m. the day before the class takes place. We recommend submitting your DNA test order no later than September 1 to ensure sufficient processing time (sample testing takes 10-14 days after it’s received by the lab.

If DNA testing shows your horse does not carry a Paint pattern gene needed for participation in these select World Show classes, your entry fees can be applied to another eligible event or will be refunded.

To submit your DNA test request, follow the steps above. For UC-Davis testing, fax your form to 817-834-3152 or email it to khanthong@apha.com.

Remember, if your solid Paint has two APHA registered parents, a Paint trait as noted in the rulebook (RG-070.G.) and a pattern gene confirmed through DNA testing at an approved lab, he could qualify for a permanent status change to the Regular Registry, thanks to our new RG-070.E. rule. Read more here.
