APHA Waives Qualification For 2020 Open/Amateur World Show In Light of Current Situation

APHA Executive Director Billy Smith has confirmed that, at the current time, not only are the APHA Youth World Show, Open and Amateur World Show, and Eastern and Western National Championship going ahead as scheduled, the association has made the decision to waive qualification for the Open and Amateur World Show for 2020.

Equine Affaire- April 2-5 in Ohio is Cancelled

It is with great sadness and disappointment that we announce that Equine Affaire scheduled to take place April 2-5 at the Ohio Expo Center has been cancelled. This cancellation is based upon the evolving COVID-19 virus threat that is sweeping not only our state and nation, but also the globe. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Health have issued an executive order prohibiting mass gatherings and events from taking place within the State of Ohio until further notice as a precautionary measure against the spread of COVID-19.

How Will Coronavirus Affect the Horse Industry this Summer? Statements from AQHA, APHA, NSBA Regarding Events

Now, many people are wondering if this is only the beginning of horse show events that may be cancelled, shortened, or moved as a result of the coronavirus. If something needs to happen regarding major summer horse shows, like the AQHA L1 Championships, AQHA Youth World, APHA Youth World, or NSBA World, such as shortening of the schedules, moving dates, or an outright cancellation, how early would people be notified? What about waiving qualification if people cannot travel as much to compete at events?

Due to the uncertainty of the current COVID-19 pandemic witnessed around the globe, the AQHA Executive Committee has opted not to reschedule the 2020 AQHA Convention, but to instead cancel the event until the 2021 AQHA Convention, which is scheduled for February 25 to March 1 in San Antonio.

AQHA L1 Championship East in Ohio is Still Going Forward

“AQHA is working closely with facility management, and our top priority remains the safety of our exhibitors, their American Quarter Horses and AQHA staff, in addition to the local community,” said Justin Billings, chief show officer. “The World Equestrian Center management expects the facility to reopen well before our event, which means the suspension would not affect the Nutrena East AQHA Level 1 Championships. In the event of the show not moving forward, AQHA would notify exhibitors as soon as that decision was made and refund exhibitor show fees.”

APHA Has No Intention of Cancelling APHA World Shows

Right now we have no intention of canceling the APHA Youth World Show or the APHA Open/Amateur World Show. If circumstances change, we will communicate it widely. Regarding APHA-approved shows, each show manager needs to make his or her own decisions about continuing their horse shows. Horse show managers should remind exhibitors to take precautionary personal hygiene measures to reduce the spread of the virus.

The International Equestrian Federation (FEI), United States Equestrian (USEF) and Las Vegas Events have announced the force majeure cancellation of the FEI World Cup™ Finals 2020 in Las Vegas. The annual equestrian competition, featuring the Olympic disciplines of Jumping and Dressage, was scheduled for 15-19 April at the Thomas & Mack Center.

After careful consideration, World Equestrian Center management has elected to close after competition ends on Sunday, March 15. The facility will remain closed for next week and we will continue to address the closures week by week. We will proactively issue updates regarding our reopening. We feel this is the right thing to do at this time.
