The Del Mar Fairgrounds has indicated that they are accepting large animal evacuations due to the Lilac Fire in Southern California. Click here to read animal evacuation instructions.

“Trailers and trucks can stage on Jimmy Durante Boulevard and will be routed into the East Stable gate. Impacted residents should gather up pets and load livestock into trailers if you have them. When you leave with one load of animals, you might not be allowed back in to get more animals. If you need help rescuing livestock or pets, call Animal Service’s 24 hour emergency dispatch at (619) 236-2341. The department can dispatch an officer to attempt to rescue your animals.” (San Diego County Emergency Site)

The latest update via their FB page this morning (12/8) indicated they are at 850 animals. “We could still use feed and bedding, animal medical supplies, exam gloves, blankets, and halters and leads. Our volunteer crew is amazing. Our next shift need is at 10 am.”

Interested volunteers may contact 858-755-1161 for more information. If you would like to give monetarily to the Del Mar Fairgrounds’ animal evacuation efforts, make payment to:

Helpful Tips:

Protect Yourself From Smoke During a Wildfire (San Diego County Emergency)

Take steps to protect yourself during wildfires.

  •  If you smell smoke it is likely that it’s at a level that is unsafe to breathe.
  •  In areas where you smell smoke it is advised that you limit physical activity, and if possible, stay indoors to limit your exposure.
  •  If you are bothered by smoke or sensitive to it you should move out of it until it clears up. You can shelter inside, but if it gets smoky inside, leaving is the best idea.
  •  If you are advised to stay indoors, keep indoor air as clean as possible. Keep windows and doors closed unless it is extremely hot outside. Run an air conditioner if you have one, but keep the fresh-air intake closed and the filter clean to prevent outdoor smoke from getting inside.

What to Do During a Power Outage (San Diego County Emergency)

If you’ve been affected by a power outage do the following:

  • Use only flashlights for emergency lighting. Never use candles during a power outage due to the extreme fire risk.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed.
  • Keep potentially hazardous foods, such as meat or poultry, chilled to 41°F or less.
  • Do not place hot or unrefrigerated foods in the refrigerator once the power has gone out. It will raise the temperature inside the unit. Chill food with ice baths as needed.
  • Any foods that were prepared prior to the power outage that were not rapidly cooled should be discarded.
  • If the freezer is not full, group packages together so they will retain the cold more effectively. Without power, a full freezer will keep everything frozen for about two days. A half-full freezer will keep food frozen one day.
  • Keep meat and poultry items separated from other foods so if they begin to thaw, their juices will not drip onto other foods.
  • Discard any thawed food that has risen to room temperature and remained there for four hours or more.
  • Do not run a generator inside a home or garage. Do not connect a generator to a home’s electrical system. If you use a generator, connect the equipment you want to run directly to the outlets on the generator.
  • Eliminate unnecessary travel, especially by car. Traffic signals will stop working during an outage, creating traffic congestion.
