Amateur Weanling Colt World Champion- Josh Weakly and BPF Midas Touch

By: Brittany Bevis

Those of you familiar with the myth of King Midas and his wish to have “the golden touch” will understand the perfect significance behind the name of Josh Weakly’s weanling colt, BPF Midas Touch. In this case, all “Midas” touched did turn into gold when he claimed a World Champion title, and appropriately a golden globe, this morning in Amateur Weanling Colts at the 2014 AQHA World Championship Show.

The Reserve World Champion in the class was David Hinkle with NonStopable. Coming in third place was Steven Jensen with Denali.

“Midas” is by the AQHA stallion, The Top Secret, and one of two young halter prospects Weakly purchased this year from Steve Robinson. Yesterday, Weakly showed the filly, BPF Bombshell, by Telasecret and out of Fearles Felecia, to a third place finish in Amateur Weanling Fillies. Earlier this year, Midas won the Open Weanling Breeders Futurity in Iowa. Next week, trainer Ross Roark will lead Midas in Open Weanling Colts here at the World Show.

“He is a real pretty bay colt that has a lot of eye appeal,” Weakly says. “He’s very mature, pretty headed, and he is very correct. He is short-crouped and short backed. Those top three colts were pretty sporty, so I will be anxious to see how the individual placings ended up. It was a pretty good class.”

Now that Weakly is done competing here during amateur week at the AQHA World Show, he plans to celebrate his family’s big wins. “We’re going to celebrate tonight!” he says. “We’re going to celebrate Kaleena’s win in Amateur Showmanship and my win this morning.”

In the Amateur Yearling Colts class, Dr. Steven Jensen led his home-bred TF Doctor Cool to a win. The Reserve Champion in the class was Lonn Smallwood with Valentino. Rounding out the top three was Jerrid Nightingale with Kids Shine.

Preparing “Doc” for his class today was trainer Tom Robertson. “Tom took him and taught him a few manners, which he needed, and got him filled out,” Jensen says. “He is actually just now coming into himself. As a two and three-year-old, I think he is going to be tough. I think he is just now starting to hit his lick.”

“He is 15.3 and his mother is 16.1, so I expect he will be 16.1 to 16.2. We absolutely loved him as a baby. He was the fanciest baby on the farm. Then, earlier this year, he hit his growth spurt, and we thought we had a Hunt Seat horse on our hands! We didn’t think he was ever going to stop growing enough to be a Halter horse that we could show this year.”

Thankfully, Doc’s stature finally caught up with his size, just in time to achieve a World Champion title this morning. “He is so strong and balanced across his top. He flows from his head to his tail. There is no choppiness and no pieceness. He still lacks some muscularity that I think he will need to hopefully be that stallion I think he can become. It’s hard to be 15.3 hands tall and a yearling and have all that muscularity. I anticipate it will come; it was there as a baby.”

Now that Jensen’s top stallion, Kid Coolsified, is getting older, he hopes Doc may one day be able to fill his horseshoes as a future outstanding breeding sire.

“When I wean my babies, they get gelded, so for them to make it as a stallion past weaning, I have to see potential,” he says. “Kid Coolsified, who is currently the leading sire for AQHA Halter Horses is getting a little age on him, so we are looking for a potential replacement sire down the road. Doc could be the one.”
