The late Robie Herman’s influence on the horse community and beyond is so great, the Dr. Robert “Robie” Herman Sportsmanship Award was established in 2025 by the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association. The inscription on the perpetual award reads:

Dr. Robert “Robie” Herman Sportsmanship Award

In Loving Memory

February 6, 1977 – February 6, 2025

A man of unwavering honor, Robie’s passion for horses and the sport was only matched by the strength of his character. He loved deeply, competed with integrity, and exemplified the true spirit of sportsmanship both in and out of the arena.

Robie’s dedication, kindness, and respect for others leave a lasting legacy, and his example will continue to inspire all who knew him.

This year’s honoree is Emerson Knabenshue.

“It was such a surprise, and I am very honored for what this award represents,” says Emerson.

Those who know of Emerson’s grace, poise, and kindness understand it’s not a surprise at all.

“We’re so proud of her,” says Elizabeth Knabenshue, Emerson’s mom, who wrote these words after the presentation.  “Each win, loss, and accomplishment in life is special in one way or another. It teaches us and it inspires us. But today Emerson was recognized for her sportsmanship by her peers and OQHA. She was awarded the Dr. Robie Herman Sportsmanship Award. A Huge Thank You to the Herman Family, the Berryhills, and OQHA. As parents what a moment to see her be recognized for the kind and generous soul she is.”

Congratulations, Emerson! We at the Equine Chronicle wholeheartedly agree and appreciate your presence with us at the shows and in the industry.
