By all accounts, the 2014 Madness in March horse show, that took place in Wilmington, Ohio over the weekend, certainly lived up to its new nickname. According to Mark Harrell Horse Shows, the overall entry total topped out at 7,700 entries in all divisions, which showed a boost of nearly 2,000 entries over the previous year.

Originally referred to as the SOQHA Winter Circuit, the show’s new basketball-themed moniker was explained by SOQHA President Judd Paul in an interview earlier this year. “Our show changed its name to Madness in March, because that’s exactly what it was last year,” Paul says. “We had a fantastic show.” (EquineChronicle, 2014)

Bringing back the popular 3-Year-Old and Over Novice Horse Western Pleasure class with a total purse of $35,000 was just one of the ways Paul ensured a slam dunk turnout again in 2014. This year’s slot class included a $15,000 check for the winner and additional $5,500 in bonuses for the top two placing maiden horses and limited riders. Click here to view the results of the class.

As it turns out, some horse trainers really do have game. Slot class participant, Donnie Recchiuti, showed off his shooting skills and won a $1,000 check for his efforts during the class’s Equine Chronicle Basketball Shoot.

Other highlights of the show included a one-year lease of a beautiful Kiefer three-horse trailer, which was awarded to an exhibitor by random draw. In this case, the lucky recipient was Terribeth Gordon. The show also hosted over $6,000 in NSBA classes and cash and prizes totaling over $90,000.
