AHC Sheds Light on ELD Mandate During 2018 APHA Convention

On Feb. 21, DOT released two guidance documents that shed more light on the rule as it pertained to horses and agriculture. They also opened a comment section on their site and put out a call for questions and concerns, which will be used to develop a frequently asked question document. AHC expects 85% of the horse industry to be exempt from the ELD requirement once final clarifications are made.

Some of the most notable included Performance Halter for the amateur and youth divisions, adding a Top 20 award for the Amateur Walk Trot division, and a modification to the scoring system for Showmanship, Horsemanship and Equitation. Other noted discussions that I heard about, included the possibility of a competition license for SPB horses to compete with regular registry horses.

The horsemen are AQHA Past President Gene Graves of Grand Island, Nebraska; Dr. Tom Lenz of Louisburg, Kansas; Robert Sutherland of Overland Park, Kansas; Georga Sutton and her late husband, Raymond Sutton, of Gettysburg, South Dakota; and Hawaiian Princess, breeder and horsewoman Abigail Kawananakoa of Honolulu.

The 2017 Don Burt Professional Horseman of the Year is Dan Trein of Seville, Ohio. Trein has served AQHA for more than 60 years in a number of capacities including coach, judge and volunteer. He has dedicated his time to bettering the breed and the members of the Association. During Trein’s time as a judge, he has judged the Lucas Oil World four times; the AQHA Select World Championship Show, presented by Adequan® (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan); and the National Snaffle Bit Association World Show.
