UC Davis VGL Launches Comprehensive Coat Color DNA Panel for APHA Paint Horse Registration

Filed under: Breaking News,Featured,The Buzz |

By Liza Crissiuma Gershony, UC Davis VGL:

The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL) is excited to announce the release of the APHA White Pattern Registration Eligibility Panel, a new DNA testing panel designed to support registration of Paint Horses with the American Paint Horse Association (APHA).

This specialized panel includes all currently recognized white patterning genes accepted by APHA for registration eligibility, offering breeders, owners, and association members a streamlined and scientifically validated method to confirm coat color genetics. The panel includes:

  • Frame Overo (Lethal White Overo)
  • Tobiano
  • Sabino 1
  • Splashed White variants SW1–SW3, SW5–SW8
  • Dominant White variants W5, W10, W20, W22, W31, W32, W34, W35

The panel also includes SW4 and W13 for completeness of the allelic series, although these are not currently recognized by APHA for registration.

The VGL’s APHA White Pattern Registration Eligibility Panel provides a one-stop solution for breeders and owners seeking to verify white patterning genetics in Paint Horses, simplifying the process of determining eligibility for APHA registration and supporting informed breeding decisions.

The panel is now available for ordering through the VGL, and there is an option to have results submitted by our lab directly to APHA to support registration applications.
