Whether you are buying your first horse trailer or your next, the process can be somewhat intimidating and oftentimes, stressful. There are so many different types, manufacturers, and models of horse trailers for sale, it is important to become familiar with the benefits and disadvantages of certain horse trailer features. I hope to cover all that and more, so you have all the information you need to decide what trailer best meets your needs.

A good starting point

The search for your new or used trailer should begin with an assessment of your needs. And, so you do not miss anything, make a list of your requirements. Your first consideration will likely be the number of horses you will be transporting.

The towing capacity of your vehicle could be a limiting factor in your search. Attempting to haul more weight than your truck is rated for will make it difficult getting up to speed on the highway, climbing hills, and stopping promptly. These factors greatly impact your safety and could put your horses at risk.

Find and consider the maximum trailer weight rating (MTWR) on your vehicle’s identification plate located inside the frame of the driver’s door. Remember also that your maximum trailer weight will include your horse, tack, and every item you will be transporting.
