Recap of Yesterday’s Action From 2013 NRHA Derby

phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpg-1June 23, 2013 – NRHA press release by: Christa Morris –The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby Show moved into its second day with more than a dozen classes for non pro, youth, green and open riders. NRHA also hosted its Annual General Membership Meeting, Judges Monitor Meeting for exhibitors and an NRHA Professionals Meeting. The Derby, held in Oklahoma City, also will host Interscholastic Equestrian Association, United States Equestrian Federation and Federation Equestre Internationale classes later in the week.

Three-Way Tie in Santa Hill Ranch Novice Horse Non Pro Level 1 and Novice Horse Level 2
Three entries in today’s Santa Hill Ranch Novice Horse Non Pro Level 1 and Novice Horse Level 2 earned a 144.5 from the judges:

  • Karen Shedlauskas (Austintown, Ohio) and Hickorys Baylite (Hickory Chic Olena x Lucky Baylite) – Shedlaukas, an NRHA member with more than $116,500 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings, owns the 2009 stallion.
  • Lindsey McCutcheon (Denton, Texas) and Mighty Miss Gee Whiz (Tivitos Sugar Bar x Ms Gee Whiz) – McCutcheon has accumulated $123,142 NRHA LTE. The 2009 mare is owned by Kathleen and Scott McCutcheon of Whitesboro, Texas.
  • Jessicah Torpey (Princeton, Ky.) and Wunder Bread (Nu Chex To Cash x CF Spice Girl) – Torpey has won multiple NRHA World Championships and Reserve World Championship and has more than $590,000 in NRHA LTE. The 2009 stallion is owned by Torpey Performance Horses.

Torpey and Sparkling Major – Non Pro Winner
Fingland and Mister Dual Train – Prime Time Non Pro
Jessicah Torpey returned to the arena in the Non Pro class to mark the highest score of the show thus far, a 150, on Sparkling Major (Major Vaquero x Major Affair). The 1999 stallion is owned by Torpey Performance Horses and has earned more than $83,200 in the NRHA show pen.

William (Bill) Fingland, Jr. (Broken Arrow, Okla.) ended the class in second place with a 144.5 on Mister Dual Train (Mister Dual Pep x Nics Train). The duo also won the Prime Time Non Pro class with their run. Fingland has shown to win more than $31,800 in NRHA competition. He and Patty Fingland own the 2002 stallion with more than $39,300 NRHA LTE.

Martin and Diamond Dappled – Fowler Dodge Intermediate Non Pro Winners
Sandra Martin (Fredericksburg, Texas) won the Intermediate Non Pro class and placed second in the Prime Time Non Pro class on Diamond Dappled ($33,900 NRHA LTE) with a 142.5. Michael Martin owns the 1995 stallion who is by Shining Spark and out of Sun Dappled.

Frank Costantini, Jr. rode his Wrangler Derby Dayz (Starlights Wrangler x Spanish Dun It, $21,280 NRHA LTE) to a second place finish with a 141.5. Costantini currently serves as the president of the Reining Horse Sports Foundation.

Anderson and Wimpys Showboat – Fowler Dodge Limited Non Pro Winners
Amy Anderson, of Marietta, Okla., won the Fowler Dodge Limited Non Pro showing her Wimpys Showboat (Wimpys Little Step x Ms Holywood Showtime). The duo marked a 144 for a 3.5-point lead. The 2006 stallion has NRHA career earnings of nearly $26,500.

With a 140.5 was Gregory Lilley (Weatherford, Texas) and Steady Little Dually (Dual Peppy x Da Steady Holiday). The 2005 mare is owned by Gregory & Kristen Lilley.

Cartillar and Gimme Major Bucks – Youth 14-18 Winner
Morris and Mr Lonley 2006 & Wells and The Ultimate Magnum – Unrestricted Youth Co-Champs
Wells and The Ultimate Magnum – Youth 13 & Under Winner
It took a score of 144 to win today’s highly contested Youth 14-18 class. Wynne, Arkansas’ Tori Cartillar and Gimme Major Bucks (Smart Starbuck x Majors Serendipity) bested the field by one point for the win. Cartillar has been very successful in her first year of showing racking up a handful of wins on the 2003 gelding owned by Djuana Cartillar.

Two entries marked a 143 to tie for second: Emily Morris (Davenport, Iowa) riding Wimpys Little Boss (Wimpys Little Step x Topsail Boss Missie) and Meloney Morris (Memphis, Tenn.) riding Mr Lonley 2006 (Dualin For Me x Snapps Hickory Chip).

Emily has been an NRHA member since 2010 and qualified twice for the Adequan® North American Affiliate Championships (NAAC) aboard Wimpys Little Boss.

Meloney and Mr Lonley 2006, a 2006 gelding, tied for the win in the Unrestricted Youth class with Kenleigh Wells (Valley View, Texas) and The Ultimate Magnum (Magnum Chic Dream x Queen De La Club). Meloney has been a member of NRHA and has been showing this gelding since 2011. Wells and The Ultimate Magnum won the Adequan NAAC 13 & Under Championship last winter. They also clenched the win in the Youth 13 & Under class at today’s show.

Second place in the Youth 13 & Under class went to Sarah Armenta (Whitesboro, Texas) and Spook Goes Hollywood (Smart Spook x Dun By Command). Sarah has been an NRHA member since 2010.

Wharton and Dainty Little Step – Green Reiner Level 1 & Level 2 Winners
Brooke Wharton (Vernon, Texas) and Dainty Little Step (Wimpys Little Step x Tucks Little Poco) claimed wins in the Green Reiner Level 1 and Level 2 for the second day. The new NRHA member marked a 145.5 on the 2006 mare owned by WT Waggoner Estate (Vernon, Texas).

Taking second place in both Green Reiner classes was Rebecca Cates (Haslet, Texas) and Oaks Steady Star (Steadys Dude x IR Oaks Star) with a 140.5. The team has shown actively in Youth and Green Reiner classes since 2011. Two Doves Ranch owns the 2005 mare.

TODAY AT THE SHOW
Monday will bring the first section of the $185,000-added Non Pro Derby, Prime Time Non Pro and Youth Non Pro. The show starts at 8 a.m. in Coliseum. The Adequan Championship Arena will welcome another set of ancillary classes including $1,000-added Intermediate Open, $500-added Limited Open and $500-added Rookie Professional, followed by $100-added Rookie Level 2 and Jackpot Rookie Level 1. The ancillary classes are scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.

NRHyA Officers, Delegates and Affiliate Youth Officers will take part in a special NRHA sailing trip on Monday. Staff from the Oklahoma City YMCA will lead the group during their nautical adventure and team building activity.
