AQHA VP Craig Huffines Speaks About Strengthening Youth Involvement

Last year, Sport Illustrated reported findings from a study done by the Sport and Fitness Industry Association that amid concerns of an emphasis on sport specialization, more kids than ever in the United States are not playing sports at all. It was reported that inactivity among children approached 20 percent in 2014, continuing a six-year decline. The study cites the pressure on parents to place their kids on competitive teams, invest in expert coaching and skill development, as well as the cost required for serious programs to compete against one another, which has made youth sports a lucrative industry.

“The Congress was the 2nd largest APHA show in the USA last year because of our exhibitors. We want to reward them for that,” says Congress Chair Casey West. “This year, we have expanded our overall award program to include not only the overall Champions and Reserve Champions but the 3rd, 4th and 5th places also. We will also be rewarding our High Point and Reserve High Point winners in each division as we’ve always done.”

For the second year in a row, Alfred Hewitt and Naturally Brilliant were named the champions in the National Quarter Horse League Huntfield Open Hunter Derby. Held annually during the Stars N Stripes and Big A horse shows in Conyers, GA, the Derby brings the feeling of an international, show jumping event under the stars with a Quarter Horse twist.
