Through two tough weeks of World Show competition, trainer Shannon Gillespie of Whitesboro, Texas, piloted a bevy of talented horses into the John Justin Arena. While her performances brought cheers and championships for thrilled clients, they also carried her close to the top of a different competition: the chase for the high-point exhibitor award.

“You need to have a strong and willing horse this time of the year. They’ve been to the Congress for three weeks and been shown. Then, they’ve got to come home and sit for a bit. Then, they have to get ready again. It takes a special horse to get here.”

“It’s been a long time coming,” she says. “It just gets me all teared up. I’m very excited. I’ve been coming to the World Show for longer than I can remember. I showed as a youth when the show was still in Tulsa, probably 79′ to 84′. And, I’ve been coming ever since.”

“My heart is still racing,” she says. “I didn’t know if it would be possible. I love the horse, and I know that everybody else loves him. I don’t know… I thought maybe because I’m a female it might be a little harder for me. It takes a special horse to get there, and he was that horse.”

Sellers were given the option to place reserve prices on their consignments or to require seller confirmation of the final price, which gave them 24 hours to accept or deny the final bid. When it was all said and done, three horses were sold with a sale average of $4,900*. The sale yielded a gross income of $58,334*—nearly $29,000 of which goes right back into the Farnam Stakes purses in 2017.
