Katrina Burns and her horse So Darn Lazy captured everyone’s attention at the 2025 AQHA West L1 Championships at first for the magnificent contrast of this striking horse together with her daughter, a tiny equestrian in her own right.
But then Thursday night, everyone really sat up to take notice when the team of Katrina and “Louis” grabbed the top spot in the L1 Amateur Western Pleasure, since the day before, they had not only won their L1 Amateur Hunt Seat Equitation – they’d also won Reserve in L1 Amateur Hunter Under Saddle!
In this day of specialization and evolution of the modern AQHA horse, Katrina and Louis are shaking things up, and forgive the pun, but the team is on fire under the guidance of Mike and May Edwards.
“He’s just a special boy,” explains Katrina. “We bought him right after NSBA last year, and the last six months, we’ve just been getting him to relax and enjoy his job again. He’s the class clown in our barn – everybody loves him. He just has so much personality – he’s hilarious – and that’s a big component of it, I think.”
She adds that sometimes we get lost in the competition and forget to really love them and find their strengths, and they’ve been working on that with Louis. “He’s just super talented, too, and somehow he can slow down to the pleasure and then move right up again for the hunter.”
Last but not least, Louis is a leadline horse for daughter Ella, something else that makes him happy. “Ella calls him Big Lou or Lou Lou. He is a very well rounded boy.”
