First up to kick off western performance classes at the 2013 APHA World Show was western riding. Taking the top spot in Novice Amateur Western Riding was Barbara Ann Fletcher with Undeefleeted. Fletcher was fresh off a win in the Novice Amateur Hunt Seat Equitation the day before.

The Reserve Champion in the class was Barbara Messinger with Who Sez. Rounding out the top three was Diane Luckey with Hez Got It Go N On.

The Classic Amateur Western Riding class saw a hard fought battle for the top two spots with Tami Dietrich-Dobbs and Seems Like Heaven and Taylor Lynn Prince with One Flashy Sensation trading places until the very last judge. When the final judge’s card was announced, Dobbs was determined to be the World Champion with three firsts and two seconds. Prince came in Reserve with two firsts and three seconds. The third place team in the class was Christine Weiser with Nighttime Sensation.

When it became clear that the World Championship title hung on the placing of that last judge, Dobbs says she felt “complete anxiety.”

“I’ve shown horses long enough to know that it is what it is,” she says. “I gave the best performance I could, and my horse was as good as he could be. I knew it was down to the last judge, so I was just holding my breath. I heard the number one, and then I thought I had it!”

“It’s by far the best pattern I’ve had on him. It’s a very technical class. It takes a long time to perfect. This is my third year showing in it at the World Show, and every year there is something more to work on. This year, it all came together.”

Dobbs’s partner for the class was her seven-year-old gelding named “Eddie.” In the Classic Amateur Showmanship just a few classes earlier, they came in fifth place.  Later on in the week they will compete in Horsemanship and Western Pleasure. Trainer, Shannon Gillespie, will compete with the gelding in Senior Western Pleasure and Senior Western Riding.
