Bill Cox is a lifelong equestrian who started out like most–with humble origins and a big dream.

While competing at local shows in Ontario, Canada, Bill fantasized about what it would feel like to win a class at the Tom Powers Futurity or the Quarter Horse Congress. Fast-forward 15 years, and Bill has done both and much more as an accomplished Select Amateur in AQHA competition.

Unlike most of his fellow competitors, Bill didn’t grow up in an equestrian household. “I’m probably the only one in my family who’s been involved with showing horses,” he says. “My wife, Cathy, has always been there in support, and she likes to be around the horses, but doesn’t ride.”

After competing at local shows in Brantford, Ontario, for many years, it was a chance encounter with clinician Dave Dellin that presented the opportunity to broaden Bill’s horse horizons in the States. “I got to talking with Dave and ended up taking a horse to him for training. We formed a good relationship,” Bill says. “Then, he ended up going with the American Paint Horse Association and gave up his training business, so he introduced us to Gil Galyean.”
