The economic downturn of 2007 turned out to be a blessing in disguise for professional horseman Beth Clemons, but it took mental and emotional fortitude for this hard-working young woman to find a new path. It would be a far cry from the hipster world of marketing, but it would tap into her innate talent with horses and set her on a journey of discovery, fulfillment, and accomplishment.

After studying fashion design and merchandising, Clemons was on the fast track to a successful career in that field when she, like millions of other Americans at that time, was ‘downsized’ during the economic freefall.

She recalls, “I had worked in marketing for Red Bull, and eventually moved into a position in the corporate office of Vans. At Vans, I handled athlete contracts and travel and expenses for the entire marketing department, along with attending school full-time and training my three-year-old horse, Harley, who I kept at the Huntington Central Park Equestrian Center. I absolutely loved my job and honestly thought I would continue in the action sports industry until the downturn when I was laid off. All I remember was being devastated and lost.”

Clemons and her horse wound up back in her native San Diego where she went to work for trainer Tonya Brown. She remembers that time vividly saying, “For four years, I learned from her wonderful program before starting out on my own.”
