Get ready, horse lovers in the South. Your horses are in for a treat – literally! Charlee Eby, a champion small fry rider at Becky George Show Horses, is the new sales representative in the South for Rye Gill Treat Co. These treats are so popular, Charlee has already sold out of their supply at the APHA World Show!
Never fear, as she’ll have them next at the Pumpjack Circuit in Abilene, followed by the NSBA World Championship Show! But there’s a backstory here, and it’s heartwarming one, so read on to learn why these treats are important and to learn how to order them now.
Rye Gill Treat Co is a nonprofit company with another young entrepreneur at the helm – 14-year-old Rye Gill, who has been making and packaging the treats for a few years now. He donates 100 percent of the profits to a charity that is local to him in Ohio, called Humane Ohio.
Rye explains, “Humane Ohio is a small organization doing big things in the community. They help pets in need by offering low cost spay/neutering and even provide pet supplies for pets in need!”
In 2023, Rye Gill Treat Co. donated over $1100 to the great cause, one Rye feels especially connected to due to his love of animals, especially Corgis. He also felt a draw to “enjoy horse showing in a unique way and seeing the horses and humans happy can inspire great things to come along! Some friends of ours had been doing charity work with creative photo shoots with their donkeys, so this led me to making horse and dog treats as a way to have a similar positive impact in the horse show community!”
So instead of just practicing before each show and packing for the show, Rye and his family gather supplies and make the treats, then they deliver them at the show.
“At a state level show, I bake about 30 treat bags. This just takes a couple hours. At the bigger shows, I make lots of extras,” he explains, and he surpassed his personal record at the 2024 Congress with 170 treat bags in-hand.
When Rye set out to do this, he also decided his recipe needed to “contain high quality, natural ingredients that animals would look forward to,” he says. “These treats feature a blend of oats and peppermint.” The best part is the natural treats are appealing to both horses and dogs!
Rye Gill Treat Co. Goes National with Charlee Eby
Charlee Eby first met Rye Gill at Congress last year, and at the Madness, Charlee told Rye she could be his “Southern Rep.”
She sold out at the Redbud Spectacular, and has now sold out at Paint World. Charlee says she wanted to be part of this project because her mom Nicole Whitley Eby, and grandmother, Jana Craig Whitley, have worked with rescues in Houston, and her mom adopted a Frenchie from a rescue (Gertie, pictured with Charlee on the right). “When she heard what Rye was doing, she wanted to help because she goes to a lot of shows in the South,” says Jana.
How to Order
Exhibitors attending the Pumpjack Circuit in Abilene, Texas, and/or the NSBA World Show in Tulsa can get treats from Charlee in person, and exhibitors in the East can find Rye at their shows such as the All American Quarter Horse Congress.
The treats can now also be ordered through the Rye Gill Treat Co Facebook page. Monetary donations big or small are also welcome anytime – contact Rye Gill Treat Co. “Remember ALLL proceeds go to Humane Ohio,” notes Rye. “I don’t keep any profits!”
