For many folks, horse show barns become an extended family. It’s certainly the case at Duke Performance Horses, a Marana, Arizona barn well known for longevity with clients and friends.
Behind the scenes, an even more powerful story of family emerged this year as trainer Kelly Penrod’s sister, Terye Penrod-Cheatham, returned to the barn to fulfill her dream of showing a Hunt Seat horse after 30 years out of the irons.
She did so with BlazingHotInvestment, by Blazing Hot and out of That Certain Chip, in the L1 Amateur Hunter Under Saddle at the Arizona Sun Circuit, the largest AQHA circuit in the world. The last time she showed a Hunt Seat horse, she was 23 years old. “So I’m 53 now, so it’s been a few days,” joked Terye at the time.
Sharing the journey with Terye, as well as the success, is Kelly Penrod, who rode BlazingHotInvestment this week to a Circuit win in the Senior Hunter Under Saddle at Arizona Fall Championship. For the seasoned pro, showing “Danny” is a blast. “He’s pretty honest in the pen and he’s real pretty legged,” explains Kelly, who says there isn’t anything special she needs to do to prepare him to show. “That’s one thing I really like about him. He’s very natural, deep-hocked, and has a pretty front leg. He’s just fun to show.”
Terye mainly wishes to ride Danny in the Equitation and Hunter Under Saddle, but Kelly has also started changing leads on him. “He’s a beautiful lead changer, so maybe down the road we’ll do some Western Riding on him,” she says, noting she enjoys that event as well due to the forward motion. “I’d like to thank Trish Sarchett for giving us the opportunity to buy this horse.”
The team will be headed to the AQHA World Show in November, as Terye qualified for the Level One Champion of Champions Hunter Under Saddle and the Select Level Two Hunter Under Saddle, Kelly notes.
No doubt they’ll be cheered on by the barn Kelly calls, “The best in the world. Everybody gets along and they’re just a good group of people and I love them.”
