WACO, Texas – Baylor equestrian has hired Abbi Demel as the program’s assistant western coach, announced by head coach Casie Maxwell Wednesday afternoon.

“I am very excited to have Abbi joining our coaching staff this season,” Maxwell said. “She was very involved and dedicated as a student-athlete here at Baylor, and I know she is looking forward to giving back to Baylor and our program.

“Abbi brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the horsemanship side of our program, which I know will continue to drive our team to new heights. I am looking forward to working with her and having another Baylor graduate enter the coaching ranks.”

Named an NCEA Horsemanship All-American at Baylor in 2017 and 2018, Demel finished her collegiate career with four All-Big 12 honors which includes a Most Outstanding Performer award during last season’s championship.

Competing in both horsemanship and reining, Demel was a part of Baylor’s 2017 and 2019 Big 12 Championship teams. She also helped the horsemanship team advance to the quarterfinals of the NCEA National Championships for two straight seasons.

“As a student-athlete over the past four years, I’ve gotten to know what Baylor University and Baylor Athletics is truly all about,” Demel said. “Not only did I grow as an athlete and student, but my experience shaped me into the woman I am today.

“I am extremely excited and thankful for this opportunity to put my passion into work and continue to learn from Coach Maxwell as well as help lead our team to success and championship titles. But, most importantly, I’m excited to have a positive impact in helping these young ladies holistically become the best they can be in and out of the arena.”

A four-year letter winner for the Bears, Demel graduated with a bachelor’s degree of science in education in May 2019 and majored in health, kinesiology and leisure studies.

Demel joins the coaching staff following the Bears’ successful 2018-19 campaign that included the program’s fourth Big 12 title and a 9-5 overall record.
