“The potential risk of introducing endemic or transboundary diseases into the country’s equine population cannot be over emphasized, either at the level of the practicing veterinarian or the horse-owning public,” said Peter Timoney, MVB, MS, Ph.D., FRCVS. “Failure to suspect the occurrence of such a disease could have major consequences, especially when dealing with a contagious disease or a vector borne disease like African horse sickness.”

“Transitioning the seminar to a virtual setting allowed attendees experience the benefits of YES while remaining in the safety of their own homes,” said Katie Reynolds, AQHA director of youth programs. “All AQHYA members and nonmembers, ages 10 to 18, parents and adult leaders were invited to attend this year’s virtual seminar. Participants were given full access to live and pre-recorded leadership sessions, which are now available online for viewing at any time.”

For the past 20 years, Pilot Knob Quarter Horses has stood some of the top stallions in the industry, and, this month, they will be closing their doors as the facility changes hands. The picturesque property located in the foothills of Pinnacle, NC. has been owned by Mike Hay since 2001, where he has managed stallions like Luke At Me, Hot N Blazing, One Hot Krymsun, Mazeratti, Extremely Hot Chips, The Rock, The Krymsun Kruzer, Secretz, Whizkey On The Rocks, Telusive, An Absolute Martini, and more, breeding up to 300 mares a year.

This year, the American Quarter Horse Foundation is awarding 159 students a total of $420,750 for the 2020-21 academic year. Since its inception in 1976, the Foundation scholarship program has awarded more than $8.5 million in financial assistance to more than 1,500 young horse enthusiasts and industry members.

Second Round of COVID-19 Kentucky Equine Business Impact Survey

“Since we completed our first survey in May, the state has lifted some of the restrictions on the horse industry, which should provide a boost to equine business across the state,” said Elisabeth Jensen, KEEP’s executive vice president who oversees the daily operations of the organization. “However, we have yet to see the impact of how the pandemic is affecting horse sales and what that means for Kentucky’s equine economy. We hope that this second round of our survey can, when combined with the data from our May survey, paint a clearer picture of the challenges the industry will face.”
