The American Quarter Horse Association has received questions regarding the approval to add the drug, medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) (Depo-Provera) to the list of prohibited substances, per AQHA Rule VIO401. MPA is a synthetic progestin hormone administered to mares off-label in an attempt to suppress behavioral estrus.

MPA is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in horses and, effective August 15, 2021, AQHA will be enforcing violations as one of the Association’s prohibited substances to protect the welfare and integrity of the American Quarter Horse.

Read this MPA FAQ for more information.
