The American Quarter Horse Association hosted more than 1,469 people July 27 at the National Day of the Cowboy celebration in Amarillo. The Association also facilitated more than 200 test rides, which gave many youth and adults the chance to ride an American Quarter Horse for the first time.

The free event featured:

  • Western performer and trick roper Brian Bausch
  • American Quarter Horse test rides
  • Cowboy stories read by employees of the Amarillo Public Library
  • Rope making
  • Brand making
  • Pokey’s barrel train ride
  • American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame tours
  • Giant Hall of Fame medallion puzzle
  • Animal balloonist
  • Making your mark on a Center City replica quarter horse statue

Local partners for the National Day of the Cowboy included the Junior League of Amarillo, Amarillo Public Library, country-music station 101.9 Blake FM, Panhandle Plains Historical Museum, Center City and the Amarillo Convention & Visitors Council.

The National Day of the Cowboy campaign was founded in 2004 to preserve, protect and promote the cowboy and Western heritage. The campaign lobbies for the passage of the national resolution designating the fourth Saturday of every July a permanent celebration on the national calendar. The campaign believes in honoring cowboys and cowgirls for their enduring contribution and their courageous, pioneering American spirit.
