American Quarter Horse Association Director at Large James “Jim” Fleming of Calgary, Alberta, died on August 18.

Jim had a long career in the oilfield, working with Macobar Mud, Epsco Pipe, Sarcee Drilling and had a consulting business. He had a successful 20-year partnership with his brother, Harold, establishing Reef Mud.

Jim was also a Calgary Stampede Lifetime Volunteer and in 1988 was head of VIP transportation for the Winter Olympics. In 1979, he moved his family to DeWinton and began a lifetime of breeding and showing American Quarter Horses. He founded Image Quarter Horses.

He was the president and director of the Alberta Quarter Horse Association for many years and a director at large of AQHA. Jim was a founding member of the Team Cattle Penning Association of Alberta. Even when he could no longer ride on a team with his family, he enjoyed watching them compete. He was very proud of his grandchildren and all of their many accomplishments.

Jim is survived by his wife, Lynn; daughter, Jennifer Robson (and husband Kurt); and his two grandchildren, Josie and Tate. He is also survived by his brother, Harold (and wife Sherry), and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Greg, of whom he was extremely proud.

In accordance with Jim’s wishes, a small celebration of life will be held privately. If friends desire, memorial tributes may be mailed to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 – 325 Manning Rd. N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 2P5 or emailed to donorservices@cancer.ab.ca.

In memory of Jim, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes.
