The names Kevin Dukes and Orange Is The NewBay have become synonymous with winning the Pleasure Driving at the AQHA World Show. Their World Championship for owner Cathy Corrigan Frank in the Senior Pleasure Driving Wednesday in the OG&E Coliseum marked the fourth world title in the class for the 2012 chestnut gelding by Its All About Blue and out of Jazz E Invitation (by Invitation Only). “Juice” was bred by Diane Harris Gill of Addison, New York.
The story behind the gelding coming into the barn of AQHA Professional Horseman Kevin Dukes seemed like an opportunity meant to be, explains Dukes. “I noticed him at the Congress five or six years ago, and his owner, Loretta Magnuson, had never won a world championship – she’s in her 80’s, and I said, ‘Loretta, we need to get you a driving horse and get you a championship.’ So she said, okay, and I told her it takes a while – that I’d be looking for one, but it takes a while.”
They were at the Congress when Dukes told her that, and when he saw Orange Is The NewBay there, he thought it was too soon for him to tell her. “I thought – she’s going to think I’m blowing up her skirt, so I waited until the world show, and I said, ‘Loretta, I know I told you it might take a while, but I found your horse. And she said, okay.’
She agreed to buy him sight unseen due to her trust in Dukes, and the rest is history. Dukes explains, “He’s a pretty awesome horse. He’s won a bunch for me, and I had another client that leased him he won the World and the Congress for, and now Cathy has him leased and she’ll get to show him this year. This may be his last year – he’s been through a lot and deserves to go out on top. He’s been a good friend.”
When Juice was purchased from Mary Caitlyn O’Malley and her family on that fortuitous day at Congress, they kept in touch and continued to follow his career, as did Juice’s original trainers, Wendy Laesch and Kevin Carr. “The trainers and the previous owners love him just as much as we do,” says Dukes, “and they’ve even offered him a home if we ever retire him. Isn’t that great?”
For those thinking of trying the discipline, Dukes has this to say: “It is so much fun. There is a lot of work involved. You know, there is a lot of responsibility when you hook something to the back of a horse. So take your time, prepare your horse. Don’t rush them. Treat them right and they’ll love the event. This horse is in his teens and he still goes out there and just enjoys the heck out of it.”
